I’m curious how the mountain’s name became a cause of concern for Obama. Is he super into mountains? Was there some “big block of cheese day” moment that convinced him of this? Has there been a decades-long campaign by Alaskans that has never found its way into the news cycle? Or is he trolling Sarah Palin and laughing his executively empowered ass off?

We can talk about the politics of renaming the mountain, as people are sure to do until their faces are a frosty Alaskan blue, but to my eye the more interesting question is where this idea came from.

The AP link in the article above answers your question. It’s a “decades-long conflict” between Ohio and Alaska, dating back to at least the 1970s.

Also, the move appears to have bipartisan support:

Sen. Lisa Murkowski, who had pushed legislation for years to change the name, said Alaskans were “honored” to recognize the mountain as Denali — a change in tone for the Alaska Republican, who had spoken out against Obama’s energy policies in anticipation of his visit to her state.

(In my own humble opinion Alaska should be able to name their own goddamn mountain.)

As a Washingtonian, I’d be happy if they would switch Mt. Rainier back to Takoma. Or Tahoma. Or even Talol.

But man, is it gonna be FUN seeing the fireworks over Obama’s “uppity-ness” in doing this.

      Lulz.

Mt. McKinley was the answer I got wrong on the telephone test they gave me when I applied to be a contestant on Win Ben Stein’s Money back when few people knew who Jimmy Kimmel was and everyone was terrified of Y2K. So basically what I’m saying is yeah—fuck “McKinley”.

FYI- Fox News comments on the topic are glorious. Apparently, Obama is going to name Mt. Rushmore to Mt Obama, the country to New Islam, and is going to get rid of all Christian names of monuments.

Alaskans have referred to the 20,320-foot summit as “Denali” for years

    Even this one?

She could refer to the sky as “blue” and I’d assume it was accidental.

Are we ready to call it “Mt. Denial” when people who forgot that we had a Mt. McKinley take it upon themselves to be very upset that we don’t have one anymore?
