Educate yourself before posting biased clickbait. The PCBs were dumped using legally acquired permits. Decades later the true harms of PCBs were better understood. It wasn’t until 77 that the dumping of PCBs in public waters was made illegal.

The EPA was fully aware of studies dating as far back as the 30’s on the dangers of PCBs. They still allowed the dumping. Shouldn’t the fault lie with the body who’s soul purpose is to regulate this kind of thing?

GE would have known about the dangers of PCBs as well. In fact with the pure research facilities GE used to maintain before the days of costly regulatory compliance GE likely would have known better than the government.

The U.S. legal system, just as the Common Law system from which it derives, has always acknowledged civil liability even where the legislature has failed to make something illegal.

GE does not get a pass because earlier unenlightened pro-business government was not playing mommy for its recalcitrant corporate children.

When has that ever worked? I’m serious - has it? I cannot think of a single time a company of their size hasn’t dragged and engaged a veritable army of lawyers to avoid the consequences of their highly profitable damage.

The lingering damage is our cost for the benefit of them taking a profit and offshoring it.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, the entire concept of “states” is bizarre and arbitrary.

Some philosopher or another said ‘history’ was ending or something like that. Maybe what he was worked up about was the end of arbitrary states, making history as he knew it meaningless. Millions of people just crossing borders like they’re the imaginary lines they are.

Even worse, our states’ borders are super arbitrary. Are my interests anything like the western half of the state? Hell no. Are they similar to the people right across the river in a different state? Yes! Is there a piece of a neighboring state surrounded by my state for no reason? You bet!

I think the county/city system is a weird waste of resources too. Especially when the city fills the county except some weird little pockets.

I used to work in the records department of the New England EPA office. Records were organized alphabetically based on the corporation that was responsible for the environmental disasters. The exception was GE which had its own file room because their huge amount of files no longer fit amongst all the others.

Yes, I love those Startup New York state ads where they proclaim how business friendly they with no taxes for 10 years when you bring your company to their state. Uh-huh, sure.

Here’s the deal dumbass NY bureaucrats—whom I’m sure are utterly smug with what they’ve come up with—what makes you think the businesses will stick around past 10 years? Say a decade from now New Mexico offers the same deal, so will these companies be loyal to NY or will they book for NM? You say “loyal” and you’re delusional.

This pitting one state against the other so to “gain” the upper hand with businesses is a fool’s errand. They’ll always play the states against each other, so it’s a race to the bottom of the economic ladder as less taxes means worse services for everyone living in the area while the companies laugh at states’ stupidity.

It was still a bad idea, but NY had to try something, we're the least desirable state in the US to start a business.

True fact: “oil filled capacitors” (which means filled with PCBs) are highly prized by certain audiophiles for their sonic properties.
