This is showing my age, but my response to this was “Ohhhhh so THAT’S what BAE is.”

actually its just babe with the end cut off, because saying entire words is hard. Someone then decided that this shortening should be phonetically spelled bae, which is just one letter shorter.

This who not using whole words thing is really perplexing to me. It’s like when people talk about DC/Maryland/Virginia as DMV. I always know they are young and new around here because no one who has lived here longer than five years says that unless they are trying to appear cool.

      Absolutely perfect.

It’s like they think the students are too stupid to understand clear messaging versus a “hip” slogan.

It might be stupid and appropriative, but I much prefer it to the “consent is sexy” campaign. It actually gets the point across - consent must be gotten before sexual activity. Though honestly, the people Columbia wants to get the point across to are probably the ones ignoring it (or ridiculing it) the most.

It’s a shame “consent is something normal, non-rapey people do” doesn’t quite roll off the tongue.

There will always be people campaigns like this will never reach. But it will reach potential victims and get them out of mindsets like “I can’t say stop if we’re already naked,” “It’s my fault because I led him on,” “It’s not rape if I never said ‘no,’” and so on.

It’s not the best consent campaign out there, but it’s far from the worst.

And idk man, claiming that use of “bae” by olds like university administration is an appropriation of BVE reads as fairly disingenuous. Pretty much any and all slang that’s popular with young people has origins in BVE. That level of appropriation is constant. But tracing this sort of use of generational slang by Columbia back through an already thoroughly-cemented racial appropriation by a younger generation of white people and holding it responsible for that feels unnecessary, no?

Keep trying, college kids! You’ll get this whole activism thing right one day. You really will (some of you, at least). Just remember, a thoughtful and informed position is #BAE. If you don’t have that, then it doesn’t matter that you got your story on Jezebel, you’re not doing your cause much good.

The person who emailed in about the campaign probably figured she was increasing the chances of it being published by a Gawker Media site if there were at least a hint of a racial angle. To be fiar, race baiting does sell/get clicks these days.

Clearly this is an important issue. That’s why they’re number one concern was to run and tell Jezebel and complain to the student newspaper.

Yeah this really doesn’t sit well. You need to go straight forward with consent issues and leave the corporatized hipification speak to the oil companies and fast food.

Really, serious people actually made fun of the arts option? Because...the arts are a terrible way to think deeply about ethics and to approach one’s own and others’ life experiences in a meaningful and empathetic way? I guess if you don’t take a multiple choice exam about it at the end of the semester, you haven’t learned anything, you’ve just dicked around.

God, no wonder our arts and humanities education sucks so fucking much in this country. “Art? That’s like — fingerpainting to entertain babies, right? IN COLLEGE?”
