Let’s not talk about the killer’s motive here. MOTIVE DOES NOT MATTER.

What matters is that there will always be angry and unstable people in the world, but here in American they can easily get guns and kill people. Shameful.

LIVE! Killed LIVE and on the air! We now have people being MURDERED on live TV. We have CHILDREN being murdered in their classrooms. Nothing gets done. We, as a country, through our inaction have said this is A-OKAY. Just another day in the beautiful United States! Let freedom ring and god bless America and her guns!

This country is DISEASED. Look at our political discourse. Look at our racial and economic disparity. There is a rot in this country, a gangrene, and it’s SPREADING.

Two journalists on live morning TV, broadcasting their own murder. ARE WE NOT ENTERTAINED?

Seriously, if the slaughter of little kids in their elementary school can’t force change (and in fact creates a cry for “MORE GUNS! MORE GUNS!”) than nothing will.

I think we should watch it so we will be upset.

Maybe if we get angry enough we will try to change our gun crazy culture.

Just saw this pop up on my iPhone. It’s terrifying and horrific and tragic. The Facebook posting of the video already has many comments along the lines of “Well, if they had been armed they could’ve fired back and shot the asshole.” I’m so sick of these shootings happening day in and day out and all we can do is encourage more shooting.

I’m glad this was posted on here separately from the Gawker article, because I just can’t wade into the comments there are something like this.

Do not watch the video, really. Spare yourself.

This is heartbreaking and I want to hug all of my local Philly news crew today. Many of them have worked here for years and years, and they feel like family. It’s horrifying that simply doing a fluff piece on the local morning news would put them at risk of being heartlessly killed in front of viewers drinking their morning coffee.

I am sick over this and my heart goes out to their loved ones and coworkers.

Yeah, I’m always relieved when Jez doesn’t repost straight from Gawker. Sometimes they do and I don’t realize it straight away and I’m reading through the comments section like “WHAT IS HAPPENING RIGHT NOW HAS EVERYONE LOST THEIR MINDS? ...oh nvm I’m on Gawker.”

Happened just this morning with the Sam and Nia article. Like 80% of the comments pertained to Nia’s “fuckability.” I was indescribably relieved when I realized it was a crossposted Gawker article because for a minute I thought there’d been some sort of mass influx of trolls. Lol nope, just Gawker’s core commentariat doing what they do best.

You know what the worst of this is? The fact that it’ll happen again. And again. And again. As night follows day, it’ll happen again. There are people walking around today who, in a day or a week or a year or two years who will be shot dead by some dude with a gun and nothing holding him back. It could be you, reading this. It could be me. It could be any of us. And we will do nothing to prevent it.

    Madness. It is madness.

that’s what scares me the most, is that these aren’t even like.. famous people, or radical people, or anything like that.

these are small towns that are being affected, by seemingly normal people.

it could happen to LITERALLY ANYBODY, and that scares the shit out of me.

And all because gun nuts will say “laws won’t stop criminals from getting guns”, completely ignoring the fact that these types of shootings usually are perpetrated by people who acquired their weapons legally due to the stupid laxity of our gun laws, and people are stupid enough to fall for that same old stinky red herring over and over and over again.

    Better gun laws. NOW.

I am tired of these stories. I am sick that one of my thoughts is how happy I am to work in a building with security guards and an office that has multiple exits. Those are things I should not be thinking about. I should not think about my son in daycare and whether he would be in danger if there was a shooter.

I work in a place where we actually have an active shooter policy. I hate that we have one. I hate that we have to have one. I hate that the laws of this country enable people in ways that require us to be prepared that one of those people will eventually be pissed off enough to come looking for someone to act out their anger on.

So does my kid’s school, I think it’s standard now. They do drills a couple times a year, and it causes high anxiety on my local mom groups those days. And this is in canada, I cannot imagine that this will just ever be the cost of doing business. All these comments wishing for better laws, why is this not subject to the hard questions of your candidates? Instead, the news making it to the top of the elections right now is shit like anchor babies and border walls and deporting the marginalized. But it's ok to shot to babies and movie goers and parents and kids wearing hoodies.... Because the fucking British exercised bad government to you a couple of hundred years ago.

I just keep reminding myself that all these deaths, all of them have to be acceptable, on some level, to the NRA-types and their ilk. Collateral damage of living in a “free” (aka armed) society: some people are going to be innocently shot and die. And they are okay with this because they believe that the right to bear arms supersedes a few people who will lose their lives because of it. There won’t be a time when they think “too many” people have died, because this is just part and parcel to wanting a society armed to the teeth, and they know it. We are the fools for being surprised every time— they expect it as the price to pay for their American soil “freedom”. Some of us must die.

I wish there would be some statistics of people who were killed each year, despite being gun-owners, versus people who survived each year because they used their gun... or something that shows the imbalance in innocent people losing their lives that you discuss.

Do you wish is existed because it is clearly a fantasy? It is well proven that owning a gun makes it more likely you will be killed by a gun.

I’ve long ago accepted that despite my deepest wishes, guns will never leave this country. So now what I want is for everyone to demand responsible gun ownership, and a ban on assault weapons.

I was born in NJ but moved south 15 years ago. I’ve come to love saying the word “Y’all” and the joys of sweet tea. But I’ll never get how casual people are with guns around here. There’s a shooting range 1/2 mile from my apartment. And I always see signs for gun shows. And I fucking hate it.
