No one in this world, so far as I know—and I have researched the records for years, and employed agents to help me—has ever lost money by underestimating the intelligence of the great masses of the plain people. Nor has anyone ever lost public office thereby.

    — H.L. Mencken

Trump is the most American candidate since my cousin, William Henry Harrison, mastered the campaign strategy known as “always bring more liquor to the polls than the other guy.”

We can only hope that a Trump presidency would be as mercifully brief.

He went quickly, and 140 years before I was born. It made the loss easier.

Ugh if this were an actual thing 25 years ago, the 90s might have been dominated by President Hypercolor.

      (seriously; we are the dumbest)

Say what you want about President Hypercolor, but he kept his promise to cover every surface in America with color-changing fabric. I mean, we’ve all gone blind from the extremely bright, constantly changing colors, but he kept his promise.

This is how they do it, god bless em. Give us a long leash, let us do our crazy thing for a couple hundred years, fight ourselves and the world, then inspire a novelist to write an immensely popular series of stories featuring, among other things, a telepathic hat that can assign labels to people based on their destinies and true selves. We get so enamored of this image that we believe it can help us choose our leaders. Our civilization topples under such poorly chosen leadership and they swoop back in to rule us once again. The Brits play one hell of a long game.

Luntz continued. “Donald Trump is punishment to a Republican elite that wasn’t listening to their grassroots.”

Actually, Donald Trump is the logical outcome of a Republican elite that was listening too closely to their grassroots. You can trace nearly a straight line from McCain’s decision to choose Sarah Palin as his VP to Donald Trump running for the presidential nomination. The Republican grassroots is stupid as hell and Republican elites (like Luntz) prefer it that way. Their problem is that they’ve lost control of the rubes.

Setting aside the mystique of his appeal or questions about his viability as a candidate, I honestly have doubts that Trump really wants it. He wants the attention. He wants to be taken seriously. He wants people to THINK he’d be a great president. He loves making noise and having people listen.

But part of Trump’s appeal, I would think, is that he’s clearly having way more fun than anybody else on the campaign trail right now. He’s wearing hats and saying incredible shit and flying around in machines with his name on them. He’s an old billionaire who can do whatever he wants, and loves attention, and he’s kind of living his best life RIGHT NOW.

And while I think Trump says and believes some moronic things, I don’t think he’s a dumb person. And I kind of suspect that deep down, he figures actually BEING president would not be nearly so fun as running for it. I could be totally wrong, but I wonder.
