Nothing controversial about it - he is totally rocking that sweater vest (and I think it’s kind of hot).

Right?! Smart and witty can even make a sweater vest look sexy to me.

I love the clear and present “Your move, IRS” subtext that lurks under every aspect of this fabulous stunt.

The IRS isn’t going to do anything. If you look at their website, they say they will eventually donate all the money to Doctors without Borders. They are operating fully within the scope of the law, and actually, within the more strict rules of a 501(c)3 than a church, which has more leeway. It definitely would have been a more interesting experiment if they had not. So basically, this “experiment” is funny but ultimately pretty pointless.

The point is that the IRS needs to crack down on these other “Churches”....

Thing I learned last week - John Oliver went to the same University that I went to for my MA! I mean we were 10-12 years apart, he was an undergraduate and I was postgraduate, and our fields of study were completely different but I am going to take this tiny connection I have to him and enjoy it immensely.

This reminds me of this for some reason:

Sure, I’m blind in one eye, and my other eye was infected that day from picking at it, and I was tired, and I’d been swimming in a pool with too much chlorine, and that was the hour my glasses were at LensCrafters, BUT I SEEN THAT FISH!

Is it odd that my brain filled in the “DAAAAANGA!” or would it be weirder if it hadn’t?

Psst... If you read their website it says all remaining money will be given to doctors without borders in the event the church closes.

You should probably...um, research this stuff before you write an article. The money is going to go to Doctors Without Borders.

He has gone on record that he LOVES it. That it’s a dream come true. I think the only way he will leave the show is if HBO carries him out kicking and screaming.

Is he an American Citizen now? It’d be a shame if he couldn’t get an OBE, or better yet a seat in the House of Lords.

I don’t believe so. Earlier in his career, he was on a visitor’s visa, which caused him some problems. He’s now married to an American, so he likely has permanent residency. That wouldn’t affect his citizenship, though.

(Isn’t the House of Lords a hereditary thing? That would be strange.)

According to the always reliable Wikipedia, he has US residency, but is not a citizen.
