Not really. I went to a school with no Greek life. Douchenozzle behavior by douchecanoes occurred anyway.

What school did you go to, and did they make headlines for similar instances of douchebaggery?

Seems like Fraternities around the US will not rest until they are all disbanded and no longer allowed to exist. That is perfectly fine with me.

The scariest thing I see when these sorts of stories come up is that these young “men” will most likely graduate and many will grow up to become managers, VP’s, and even CEOs. My thoughts are with their future employees.

It was a stupid joke that wasn’t in the best of taste. But is it really that serious to have a huge write up like this and to be grabbing the pitchforks and demanding that this frat (or even all frats as some of the other commenters have said) be disbanded? Of course not.

I think it is typical of frat life guys to portray themselves like this. If they were serious about asking females into their house or wanting to “rape” anyone, they wouldn’t be advertising it in such a manner as this. It was just a stupid joke and no reason to be offended by it.

Just because someone doesn’t get into a frat while they are in college doesn’t mean they have to be butthurt about it, which is what a lot of the people complaining here come across as to me. As someone who rushed twice and wasn’t accepted into a frat, I don’t feel any malice towards those guys. In the long run my time in college itself is a forgettable time in my life. So I feel that anyone who has graduated from college and still is pissy about not being accepted by a particular group of people should take a look at their own self esteem and not be so quick to point the finger and judge others’ actions.

It’s not funny. It celebrates and perpetuates rape culture, and as a survivor of such a thing, I can tell you that it’s not funny. To me, these are fear-inducing, even now at age 39 and years of therapy to work on these issues. I still carry with me a fear of being raped and assaulted again, and if I had a daughter (i have a son, and he knows this isn’t funny), I would be terrified to leave her at this school. In fact, I would go straight to enrollment, remove her, and send her to another school altogether — one that perhaps takes this sort of thing for what it is: a threat of violence.

It’s only funny to people who really believe that rape is funny, that violating a person’s sovereignty and body security is A-OK. It’s only funny to people who don’t really know the damage that rape brings, and the fear that it instills in people.

      And honestly, it’s just ugly.

      That Joke Isn’t Funny.

As for frats, I don’t care either way about clubs. But, I think that this culture should be questioned deeply — how sexual violence is perpetuated in the greek system and in our culture at large. I didn’t want to join a frat (coed) or sorority, so I never rushed — i’m not “butt hurt” (i also believe to be a forced sodomy reference?) when I’m critical of behaviors that are Not Funny, but a threat of violence against my body and that of other women.

    Those signs were written in the bronian language. They actually translate into English to read as follows;

“Hello, our genetic material is poison. Please do not mate with us as we will contaminate the entirety of the human race.”

Of course there’s a lifted truck in the picture. Of course. Nothing screams male insecurity more than a lifted truck. And those signs.

Fred Dobry, Sigma Nu’s national Director of Risk Reduction suggested that Sigma Nu members who live in the house were not responsible for the banners outside of their house. He tells Jezebel, “Sigma Nu Fraternity is investigating this matter, and based on what we know at this point, Fraternity members at ODU are not responsible for these offensive banners. While four members of the ODU chapter live in the building where the banners were displayed, initial information indicates individuals not associated with Sigma Nu Fraternity are responsible for the banners. Our investigation is continuing.”

I think it says a lot about Greek life that it inherently generates enough issues to require a national Director or Risk Reduction.

Obviously no-one from ODU was involved, even though the letters ODU are highlight in a different color ON the actual banners.

How terrifying would it have been to be one of the girls actually being dropped off at the school? That would be something I wouldn’t be able to shake off easily. What is wrong with our culture that rape continues to be a joke??

this was my feeling. as an assault survivor who went to university terrified of being raped (particularly because there were so many “don’t get raped” safety nights for our dorms and part of our orientation), i might have just removed myself frm the school and asked to go home.

It’s worse if the girls shrug-laugh it off, pretend it’s nothing, and are quietly terrified or buy into an idea that their role is to be that rowdy fun good time for the guys.

Rape culture is one in which "he said" is always given more weight than "she said," even when "he" has boasted about being a sexual predator.

The fact is that the laws in this country state that a person is innocent until proven guilty. All of that seems to work except when it comes to rape where people like yourself have the faculty of assuming that a person accused of rape is guilty until proven innocent. And that goes for somebody that boasts of being a sexual predator. They are not a rapist, in the legal sense, until they have been proven to be guilty of rape.

What’s very unfortunate about rape is that it is often a situation where it boils down to he said vs. she said. It’s not a rape culture to give more weight to he said. It’s a culture of the American justice system which will inherently give more weight to he said simply because ‘he said’ = innocent until proven guilty.

It’s unfortunate with rape cases where it is he said vs. she said because rapists can go free if the evidence is not there. But by the same token, the Brian Banks of the world where innocent men get sent to prison because people like yourself are prone to believe she said well before he said.

Rape Culture is when things that are legitimately part of the process of rapist that goes on to rape somebody is ignored. I don't think holding a banner in your private property that only talks about being 'fun and rowdy', as tasteless as it may be, is part of the process that a rapist may use if they subsequently rape somebody.

Have you ever seen a man accuse a woman of rape? At best he’s laughed out of the building.

Unless you are saying men don’t get raped by women, you are basically pointing out inequality in favor of women. Women’s rape claims are taken 102394803948 times more seriously than a man’s.
