why haven’t North and South Korea just gone to war and gotten it over with? What is the most probable outcome of such a conflict? would there be nukes involved? I think Kim Jong Un just needs to go away.

      Three reasons:

      1. China

      2. The South is not equipped to absorb that many starving, indoctrinated people just yet.

      3. China

The South, with the help of the US, would crush DPK in a matter of days, likely. The North is not as well equipped and their soldiers... wow. They’re well fed in comparison with the rest of the nation, but they’re all about 110 lbs and 5’ tall.

The most probably outcome is that hundreds of thousands if not millions of innocent civilians end up dead without much changing. Historically, most people believe China does not want a unified Korea that would be more aligned with Japan, Taiwan and the U.S., and that’s probably still reasonably true today.

I mean....is there ever going to be a point when we should actually be concerned about his tantruming? Feels like every year the country has a bout of ‘WE’RE GONNA BOMB/INVADE YOU’ threats, the world shushes him, and everything goes back to how it is.

Honest question. They seem toothless (at least to the rest of the world - their own population is unfortunately a different story), or at the very least, they know if they actually do do something, things will end Badly for them. (Or I would assume Glorious Leader understands that, whether or not he’d admit to it)

On a random note, I like podcasts a lot, and this reminds me of this episode that involves talking about his father and his love of movies. Very interesting insight and story involving the country.

The problem isn’t that North Koreas military might is a threat to the rest of the world; it’s that their actions could cause a typhoon of decimation across the entire world.

They have the capability of shelling Seoul until there is nothing left of it - if this happens, South Korea will definitely retiliate, and if that happens the United States will have to become involved. If the United States becomes involved, China will retaliate.

These circumstances are nearly identical to what caused WW1. When Arch Duke Franz Ferdinand was assassinated Austria-Hungrary decided it was going to declare war against Serbia. At the time A/H had a war agreement with Germany which is kind of like NATO in that “If I go to war, your going to war with me” sort of deal. Germany agreed, sent Serbia an ultimatum that was impossible to follow through with. Serbia had a pact with Russia, and Germany knew if that they attacked Serbia Russia would become involved, and if Russia became involved France would become involved, so they prepared forces at all sides.

The U.K. knowing that Germany planned on invading France sent an Ultimatum to Germany essentially telling them if they invaded France, there would be hell to pay, but Germany couldn’t risk that.

So WW1 broke out, and the tragedy was immense.

Nope. Things will change eventually (when the situation is so bad in the north things collapse naturally), but unless someone REALLY screws up, this will never be a shooting war. Everyone knows the outcome, and its ugly for everyone. The north would lose, the south would be a flaming ruin, and both the US and China would have to deal with millions of displaced people (and some very significant and important coperations (samsung) with smouldering pits for headquarters buildings). The US makes sure that the south behaves, China the north, and life goes on.

    surging indignation

I often wake up rigid with surging indignation too. Usually take care of it before entering society though.

Ugh. I worked at a mall in high school/college and if I had a long shift, and a damn leaflet was left on my car before a nice rain storm, it would stick to my car. Ugh!

I had that problem at an old place of employment so every time I came out to my car to find a leaflet I’d take it and glue it to the window of the offending business with a can of spray adhesive. They stopped putting paper on my car.

Kim Jong Un reminds me of the generic entitled, east coast, prep school, lax-bro, probable date rapist, white boy.

The petulance, arrogance, “I’m donna do this and there will be no consequences because my dad is so-and-so” douchebaggery.

If it weren’t for the fact he is totally the type the push the button on nuclear war because someone hurt his feelings, I would totally accept the Republican option of dealing with N. Korea.

Not because I’m pro-imperialism, but because he’s the kid being a shit at the grocery store/resturant/movies who’s minders seem scared and powerless to control him until some stranger rolls up and slaps them like everyone else had wanted to but wasn’t brave enough.

It’s sad and also amazing that leaflets are legitimately threatening to the regime. I hope that efforts to smuggle information into and out of the country continue apace.

9/10 times I find a leaflet in my door it makes me annoyed.

      Except that one pizza flyer.

Turned out to be one of the best pizzas I’ve ever had in the city.
