The only people I know that have signed up for this are married women. And they are kinda freaking out, without wanting to seem as such.

My own thinking is, that if you have a husband/wife behind whose back/under whose nose you could conduct affairs without arousing suspicion, then they are not torrenting for Ashley Madison downloads.

In the cases I am aware of, the husbands seem far more interested in arguing in online forums and drinking alcohol than going off on an internet data hunt. At least that has been my counsel so far.

Interesting info. I signed up at one point but after paying for a month I felt like it was bs filled with mostly fake profiles or women looking for sugar daddies.

These ladies I know feel somewhat trapped by marriage and thought of this as an outlet.
      The results have been uneven.

Personally I have enough to be dealing with on OKCupid.

This is possibly the least sympathetic group of identity theft victims outside death row, but fraud is fraud. Identity theft is the Achilles’ heel of the digital economy.

Not everyone thinks they’re unsympathetic. Last night on Gizmodo, this character got 600 commenters to ‘like’ his/her comment equating cheating cheaters with the LGBT community and castigating the Giz writer for having the gall to do nothing more than simply report the hack. He didn’t publish any user information or share any of the hacked data. He only reported the hack itself and this commenter went on a commenting bender, defending AM as a ‘hook-up site’ and saying the writer should be ashamed. The commenter also dismissed my very helpful, corrective comment, which began, “What a stupid comment.” And then proceeded to get mean. But I was right. It was a stupid comment and that’s being generous.

Sam, I hope you got some sleep last night. As soon as this story dropped, I imagined every tabloid in the world and Gawker has had to have had a team of beleaguered writers and interns up for the last 24 hours - and until they find a good one - combing the 20,000,000 names for potential stories.

Personally, I think anyone who would betray their spouse — especially in such a determined way (without even the (bad) excuse of “It was a mistake made in the moment.”) — deserves whatever pain they reap from this data dump.

If you want sex outside your marriage, tell your spouse that. Either he or she will go along with it and then there’s no need for secrecy or he or she will take you to divorce court and you will be single and free to have all the non-marital relationships you like. You don’t get to screw other people over for your own selfish desires and then cry victim when your betrayal and lies are exposed.

My problem is, who’s next? Sure cheaters might seem like a least common denominator, but there are plenty of activities that hactivists could decide are morally wrong and everyone who engages in them should be outed. If the victim isn’t doing anything illegal, dox-ing sucks and is totally wrong.

yeah I just cannot bring myself to feel any sort of sympathy for these people. And you’re exactly right, heat of the moment excuses are bullshit, but this is 10000x worse, as in they don’t even have their eye on anyone particular yet, they just know they want to go out and betray their partner’s trust with a stranger. It’s premeditated and slimy as fuck.

As terrible and abhorant as cheating is, having that be the reason for the hack is just as sickening. Vigilante hacktivism? I hate siding with the statement AM released but they’re right, the people behind this hack “appointed themselves as the moral judge, jury and executioner, seeing fit to impose a personal notion of virtue on all of society”. Two wrongs don’t make a right but it’s sure going to make a lot of divorce lawyers rich.

I’m of two minds. Having been cheated on and discovering that my ex had been cheating for years I would really have appreciated knowing a lot earlier due to sunk costs, wasted time, scary STD tests, money pissed away, etc. On the other hand, I don’t like data theft. So I’m conflicted. But I REALLY hope every person being cheating on finds out, kicks the asshole to the kerb and goes on to make a fab life sans cheater. ha!

I don’t often hear of widespread hacks of user information related to child porn or black market gun sales. While I’m not affected by this hack, I’m also not comfortable with the moral vigilantism behind it either. Who gets to say what does and does not warrant exploitation and personal embarrassment?

I would truly pay money to anyone who dumps this on the web and allows real time searches. Not because I’m in it - but because I want to find every government official who has used it.

This article points out there are US government email addresses, US Military address and even an address from someone who works for the Vatican. Why are these IDIOTS using WORK EMAIL ADDRESSES?

“Unless you paid Ashley Madison for a premium membership...”

For people who want to extra-super cheat on their spouses. Like having sex with on the jumbotron while wearing a Burger King crown, or something like that. For that special client that is committed to excellence in cheating.
