Seriously? How the hell does that work?! Are they providing some public service element I’m unaware of?

I was trying to explain male privilege to my husband the other day and the look on his face made me wish John Oliver was there to do it for me

I would like John Oliver on standby to explain most things that are so logical I can’t properly express them without having a rage-stroke

I use his piece on state lotteries to discuss rhetorical strategies to first year writing students. It’s got ethos, logos, pathos, humor, metaphor, and the topic is one that doesn’t offend/turn off too many students, like religion or feminism or whatever.

I remember watching a documentary about them and they had a family on who was donating a lot of money. Their daughter was sick and had disabilities. They were praying to make her well. She ended up dying. They blamed their lack of faith and not sending enough money for their daughter’s death. It made me so angry. She was sick and to be honest there was nothing anyone could do. This creep gave them false hope and exploited them. Now their daughter is died and they have no money.

Anyone else remember when you were a kid and your cartoons were preempted for a goddamn Billy Graham special? This provoked such a simmering rage in me that it may be the roots of my present atheism.

I would love to see John Oliver do a longer piece on Planned Parenthood defunding and the necessity of sexual health care services. I feel like it would be a nice follow up to his Sex Ed piece.

Well, it IS free, but to get any real blessings, you need to send your seed. Seed money, that is. Pastor Oliver isn’t interested in actual seeds.

He explains it so much better if you call him at 1-800-THIS-IS-LEGAL.

Stealing vulnerable people’s money is fucking wrong. Flat out lying about a faith cure for cancer, lupus, etc is disgusting and should be all the illigal. If God cured cancer then I’m sure a lot of us would still be living with loved ones. I sincerely doubt that if that woman was diagnosed with cancer that she would put all of her faith in God and forgo medical treatment.

Oh man, crazy story... SO my dad’s aunt was married to some kind of religious man (cult leader? probably.) and when she found out she had breast cancer he told her she couldn’t get treatment and that they would PRAY ON IT. They did not pray hard enough, I guess. None of our family found out until it was too late and it pretty much ate her. She died. He also took all of her money. Praise be.

Miracles’ effectiveness depend on how many groups are asking, you see? Which is why the most effective prayers tend to be the ones done by sporting teams. They get up to 50% effectiveness if they pray prior to a game.
