And that lawsuit will cost the taxpayers money, not the police. I’m not saying she shouldn’t sue, I’m saying the proceeds from the suit should come from the police retirement funds. When the “few” bad cops start costing the “good” cops money, then maybe the good cops will do something about their “brothers” behavior.

I wonder is there any reason why she cannot sue the officers personally as well as the police department...? Legal jezzies?

I feel you. I really do. But it’s a slippery slope. As a union teacher, I shudder at the thought that my pension could be impacted if a fellow educator at my school did something worthy of a law suit. I’m not responsible for some other person’s shit behavior. I wish there was an easy solution. =/

If an officer “thinks” they smell weed, they should have to call for a K9 unit. That should not be enough of a reason to sexually assault someone on the side of the road.

      K9 units are hardly reliable.

More reliable than the cop who thought my buddy had weed in the car a couple years ago.

He mistook the stench of 3 people camping for a week and the *ugh* patchouli my buddy doused himself with to cover the smell of his ass. Yeah it smells like hippies, but it totally doesn’t smell like pot.

What does 0.02 ounces of pot look like? It sounds very small for searching through her car for an hour and forcing a cavity search in a parking lot.

Ugh. I was strip-searched a million years ago in the Bangkok airport, bend over and touch your toes, the whole nine yards. It definitely felt like a violation. What had I done wrong? Nothing - except that I was a young white woman traveling across Asia with what was deemed ‘not enough luggage’. I.e. I looked like a drug mule. Yeah, that was a pretty awful experience - and yet, on some level, I see that I fit a certain profile, and the customs agents were, uh, relatively polite about the whole procedure. And were apologetic when they didn’t find any bags of drugs up my various bits.

I do not see Charnesia Corley fitting that profile just because she did or didn’t run a stop sign. No.

Did the Bangkok authorities take you outside and strip search you along the side of the road?

I think we can all understand strip searches and their need, but it’s the when and where and why this on and many in the U.S. are used that’s the bigger issue.

That’s what I’m saying. As awful as my experience was, it’s got nothing on this ridiculous situation. I hope this woman sues the hell out of Harris County, and wins.

So he found nothing in the car? So how did they manage a possession charge?

I meant where did they find it if not in the car. Was it in her purse? And if they found that before the cavity search why the cavity search?

I remember in the first article they tried to claim she consented to the search because she said “You can strip searched me”. Huge fucking difference between “you can strip searched me” and “feel free to shove your hand inside of my vagina”. If she even said the thing about the strip search, which is questionable.

There’s also a difference between “You can strip search me” and “You can strip search me??!?” but it all looks the same on paper.

Also a difference between “I’m so innocent, you could strip search me!” and “I am knowingly and actively giving you my consent to be strip searched” which could both look the same as “You can strip search me.” and is what terrifies me. In a situation like that, I could easily see myself stressing the ridiculousness of the stop by jokingly saying they could strip search me.

True, but bad story. When booking inmates, part of the routine is that everyone has to bend over and cough during inspection in order to make sure contraband does not make it’s way into the jails. An acquaintance of mine’s job was to inspect. She noticed one inmate had something white-ish that she could see. Yes, indeed something was there. But, not drugs like they normally see. It was a condom quite obviously used. Upon questioning, the lady was not surprised by this at all.

She wasn’t cavity searched when she was booked. She was cavity searched before she had even been arrested, by the side of the road, and then arrested because she struggled while strangers illegally forced their hands into her vagina. There was nothing “routine” about what happened here.

Oh, yes. Just a story I was sharing about an event that was not this event. I was not relating the two. Sorry if that was mistaken. For the second time today.

The thought of cops pulling people over for running a stop sign, (which, let’s be real, was more like a lack of a complete stop, and driving while black) is insane.

I see cops run stop signs on the daily. I don't see them getting strip searched on the side of the road.

People die as a result of drivers running stop signs. What happened to this woman and the scores of others who were driving while black is appalling, but stop signs are there for a reason, and now you’ve gone and made me a traffic narc.

What’s insane is police officers who disproportionately pull over people of color for minor offenses and use it as a pretext to harass and search them. What I’m saying is, more white people need to be pulled over for running stop signs.

Although I hope this woman wins every cent she sues for, again it will be the taxpayers who foot the bill. I’d rather see charges filed against the officers who thought it was a good idea to sexually assault someone in public because of WEED.
