I totally wouldn’t have considered the one-child policy aspect. That has the real potential to produce some seriously spoiled kids!

Something that was not apparent to me for a long time is that the one-child policy carried through for 2 generations also means no aunts, uncles, or cousins. That was one of the saddest, loneliest realizations I’ve ever had.

If you really want to get into the heads of colonial Europeans, read their descriptions of foreign cultures as they first encountered the Other, which alternate between being hilariously and horrifyingly stupid. These descriptions do not reveal much about the people they’re meant to describe because they’re so spectacularly inaccurate, naive, racist, superstitious, and self-flattering, but they tell you everything you need to know about these ignorant, ignorant people writing them. In the same way, people of the future will look back on all these fucking ridiculous think pieces on millennials and know exactly how far 30 and 40 something writers’ heads are up their own keisters in 2015.

Thank you for using the term “keister.” It’s delightful; I haven’t seen it in a long while.

It’s made me so happy seeing that old friend I didn’t even know I missed.

The same is true of British tourists or American tourists or [fill in the nationality] tourists. Tourists in general are awful.

I’m Asian-American and have been to China a number of times. The Chinese tourists you complain about are not really acting any differently than they do at home but due to cultural differences this behavior is of course perceived differently here. Chinese cities are very crowded and people are used to pushing, shoving and yelling to get through the day; service is routinely terrible in restaurants and stores; and there’s a level of acceptance of just leaving trash that’s hard for people to understand. For example, the stories about young children simply wearing onesies with the bottoms cut out so they can pee and poop on the street are true, and you’ll see signs in parks that basically say “no pooping here” that are meant for human children, not dogs.

Take this culture and suddenly throw in the ability to travel overseas (which had not been possible for more than a generation) and you’re going to have some misunderstandings and problems.

How do the men feel about the lack of women due to the one child policy? From what I’ve read, China is facing a gigantic problem because of it.

I know an American who does research on China who is very very concerned about this. He talks about it all the time as if he is personally affected. But he fucks every Chinese girl he can because white privilege so I guess he’s part of the problem.

How is it white privilege to have sex with women? It’s not like he’s starting an exclusive harem and depriving the local men of the chance to have a wife and children.

Lived in China for 7 years. While a lot of that is true the 4 grandparents thing is a little silly. One child policy didn't affect their parents. Their parents had like 5 kids. So it's not like there 4 grandparents for every 90s kid. For every 2000s kid though it's a different story

I lived there to in the late nineties when the super spoiled toddlers were getting to know western consumerism. I’d hate to think of a generation with no concept of empathy, sharing and caring for anyone other than themselves. In Japan there are a lot of single child families but the Japanese educational system makes sure that every Japanese grows up into the hive mentality.

Chinese tourists, including millennials are already flooding the world. They appear to have replaced the Americans, British and Germans as the most disliked culture imposing themselves onto everyone else. So, the cat is already out of the bag, so to speak.

Really, because that’s what I look like with shorter hair, less tan, 15 more pounds, a high 6 figure salary, and no sense of empathy or patience.

The social science research didn’t show them to be spoiled, per se, but it did reveal them to be less trusting, less imaginative, and less unselfish. These differences weren’t noted in only children in other countries to the extreme found in China so there are probably some societal/cultural aspects at play in addition to their status as only children.

It should also be noted that the one-child policy is primarily enforced only in urban areas. So those kids in the remote areas seen ordering Western products are most likely not only children.

Lack of trust and selfishness is endemic throughout Chinese society but much of it came from the 1958-61 famine where as many of 45 million Chinese died of starvation. Or as my Chinese grandmother put it, ‘those who were responsible, caring and shared did not survive.’

Being someone that is a part of the “Millennial” generation, who worked hard, got a degree, and now works a full time job. I find these articles to be infuriating. Just becuase we are doing it differently than you does not make it wrong and tbh you can go fuck yourself. I fucking hate any goddamn article on this site that has the word millennial in it because all you do is shit on us when clearly you don’t know shit about us.

I work with some millennials and I’m very impressed. They are very together and more open minded, especially the guys compared to guys my age. I’m a little embarrassed because some of them are more together than me! So don’t worry.
