Uber just started operating in our area, which goes against our current taxi bylaws. The regional council has drafted new bylaws, which are to go into effect in January after consultation. So far they include:

There would be two types of taxis, metred taxis and auxiliary taxis. Auxiliary would include services like Uber

All drivers would have to complete vulnerable sector screenings and various other safety measures. Cameras would be required in all vehicles, as well as global positioning devices.

All vehicles would require $2 million in commercial liability insurance

The insurance and cameras seems like a good start, since background checks can’t predict someone without a criminal history might not snap someday anyway.

The day I would ever trust another driver (this is my own brand of neuroticism) is a cold one in hell, being a single woman. I just won’t do it. If I’m on a plane with other people or on a bus with other people, cool.

      By myself? Fuck that. Nope.

Uber is pleased to announce that it will be reviewing the backgrounds and credentials of all Uber drivers in North Charleston. If you want us to review the credentials of drivers in your area, just wait until there is a sexual assault and we will be there within days afterward.

You've criticized Uber and therefore must be in the pocket of Big Cab, as it is entirely impossible to criticize the failings of this company without an ulterior motive.

How about better oversight? Real background checks?

Did the dude have a record previously?

Yeah, I like how sometimes people think background checks will automatically predict whether someone will commit a crime, regardless of actual background.

If the background checks for teaching middle school students couldn’t prevent this guy from getting a teaching job, I’m not sure what a background check for driving a car would do.

The details the local news report seem really crazy to me—he took the victim and her date to the drop-off point, and she asked if he would drive her a couple blocks away to her home (off the uber clock).

Instead he drove her 8 miles away where the sexual assault took place, and she was then somehow hit by a car. Too bad she didn’t have presence of mind (or a full battery) to call 911 in those 20 minutes she was kidnapped.

    Mugshot for the curious:

I was thinking of becoming an Uber Driver to make some side money, but I really don’t want to be associated with Uber.

I don’t see how a background investigation would have screened Patrick out; he was a school teacher, so probably has had a criminal record check.

I don’t think you can. The problem seems to be that as an Uber (or Taxi) driver, there are more opportunities to act on some latent desire. If there was some sort of psychological screening, that might catch it, but should we expect that of all of our drivers?

Has everyone’s favorite racist troll HDR22 been by yet to post about the Taxi Industry’s check clearing? Or is he elsewhere declaring that black people are morally bankrupt and calling everyone a fucking moron?
