      It really is worthy of comment. My grandfather, otherwise not a totally charming individual, was neither racist nor homophobic, and in fact cut ties with a friend of several decades after said friend disowned his gay son in the 60’s. I mean, on the one hand people don’t get cookies for being decent, but actually maybe they probably do when they manage to be decent with very, very few people around them modelling decency?

      My grandfather, although firmly in the upper end of middle class and not an altogether charming guy either, was not a racist. He worked in hardware in downtown Detroit all his life and the person who came closest to “friend” status, was an African American man. I never heard him say a bad thing about any other race or ethnicity despite pronouncing his country ‘Murrica. (To be fair, he also pronounced toilet as turlet.)

    Oh they edited the tape. And yes they edited it down to focus on the racist parts.

    Unfortunately for Mr. Sterling, playing the whole thing in context doesn’t do anything to change how racist those parts were. In fact, I’d bet hearing his other insane ramblings would only make it worse.

      One little side note I always found funny about this story, is how a lot of the media scrutinized V. Stiviano, and the fact that she’d changed her name in the past, somehow overlooking that Donald Sterling too changed his name. His birth name is Donald Tokowitz. He changed his name to Sterling, which means “excellent or valuable”. You tell me which name change is more grandiose.
