The cover is beautiful, but this image is just...wow. Huge props to her for speaking honestly about the sport and the things she’s endured. And good for the writer for calling out all the coded language in use around the Williams sisters. Plus, Serena was great in “7 Days of Hell.” Love her!

Almost everyone I know has had a Williams sister sighting. Some of the luckier have had an encounter. And the luckiest has worked with them for a charity function. To a one, the consensus is that they are the nicest, most gracious, smartest, kindest and fiercest “celebs” in town. Also, gorgeous.

I’ve always been so impressed by the contrast between how sweet they are outside of competition and what killers they are when competing. It’s the ideal for an athlete but not many can manage it.

    ‘genteel lynch mob.’

The best kind of mob? Also, she looks amazing on that cover, strong, beautiful, real.

I loved “booing lustily”. She’s got a way with words, in addition to her many other talents. Leave something for the rest of us, Serena! :)

It’s instructive here to spend a few minutes googling “Roger Federer,” two words that inspire sportswriters to pseudo-spiritual cant: Federer crushes and slams but also “lifts” and “lobs” and “taps,” his stroke “liquid,” his forehand a humanity-saving treatise on the seraphic potential of the fallen human form, his feminine delicacy evidence that he exists on a higher spiritual plane.

    Howley can fucking WRITE. Damn.

I love love love the comment Serena makes about on-court behavior and careers. That is a total shot at McEnroe. He criticizes her behavior all the time without realizing the irony of it. His popularity was almost entirely based on being petulant manchild on and off the court but Serene better not dare say one semi-rude thing. UGH.

Or her editor can. I am not impressed by a paragraph that beings, “One sensed .... “ Really? What one? Just one? The One? Lazy.

She is just about the greatest athlete in the history of sport and even being cued to remember all the ways she’s been written about dismissively is enough to make my blood boil this fine Monday morning.

I saw her play in the finals of the US open a few years back from awesome seats (friend connection yay!) and it was hands down one of the most beautiful things I have ever seen. She is so fucking badass and amazing and talented I cannot handle it.

And fuck all the shit she has had to put up with.

Way back when, I saw this very sweet looking 17 year old walk onto the court at one of the biggest stadiums in New York, Arthur Ashe Stadium. Transfixed on the beads in her hair, the only thing pulling my eyes away were the powerful forehands and backhands that she slayed upon her canvas, so much so that from the seats my mom and I were in you could feel the wind coming from her racket.

I remember critiquing each step, each play to see if I could incorporate that into my tennis vocabulary, and then in a final moment: elation. She won. Not just myself but the countless others that were in that stand the moment we saw Serena jumping up and down and her over the moon proud papa jumping in the stands with her win when she won her very first U.S. Open.

It was an incredible feeling not just as being a woman, but also a woman of color. What we didn’t know as observers into this fantastic moment was how far and how much she would mean to a variety of communities.

the first time i saw her play, i had tears in my eyes. it reminded me of seeing michael jordan play the knicks when i was a kid. the way she moves is like the most gorgeous ballerina who could also fucking kill you. and her love of the game is tangible.

I love that they chose the glamour shot for the cover and not the typical athletic shot.

And a glamour shot where the didn’t try to smooth or lighten or slenderize anything, because they realized she looks fucking amazing as is!

Love that she can speak fluent, perfect French to the French crowds and still gets accosted by the “Respectability Police,” cool, good, etc.

As a photographer, I think the cover is superb. I’m frequently not a fan of studio portraiture, but this is one time where it’s well done. The interview is great too, of course.
