This is a perfect example as to why every single state should make it clearly legal to record police. The excuse of, “We wouldn’t have acted like that if we’d known someone was watching” is ridiculous unless that excuse can fly for us in court too. You’re supposed to be held to a HIGHER standard, idiots, not a lower one.

Great point. Public servants deserve public scrutiny when caught in the act.

All cops should be recorded at all times while on duty. We’ve seen how many behave when they think no one’s looking.

Does that work for other crimes? I mean, if I rob a bank and try to put out the security cameras am I then golden on not having security footage used at my trial? That is going to make things a lot easier.

These cops are arguing that the tape shouldn’t be allowed into evidence because they weren’t aware they were being recorded. So you don’t even need to mess with the camera, you only need to claim you didn’t know it was there.

This really emphasizes the need for all Americans to travel abroad. Not just the fun countries, either. If you think the U.S. Has the worst cops in the world, you haven't seen much of the world.

You know, the Stanford Prison Experiment gets mocked as a Psych 101 stereotype (and Zimbardo is a total goof, let’s be real), but it totally gives you a window into how easy it is to create this kind of fucked up mindset. How you can slap a badge on someone and watch him lose his compassion bit by bit.

OR...maybe they are attracted to the field (not ALL...but the bad ones) because they lack compassion and see an opportunity to exploit the power.

My money is on these guys NEVER having compassion to begin with. Most of the cops I know/interact with are pretty chill, joke around, whatnot while on-duty, but I’ve dealt with those clowns that are either continuing their frat boy experience or wish they had one to begin with.

Don’t you realize this will undermine faith in public authorities for this video to be released? To protect the good apples the obvious solution is to hide the bad ones and allow them to continue to operate freely. Otherwise people might get the impression that bad cops are everywhere if they find out about them. Better for good cops to cover for them so that no one mistakenly assumes they are bad.

And after being caught, they’re not even apologetic about it, but are instead trying to weasel out of consequences.

These are like what we went through in the 80s as kids. Cops would routinely steal our beer and weed. What were we gonna do to stop them? Bunch of 15 year old kids in the city.

When I got my first apartment at 18 the cop next door would buy beer for us. He may have smoked with us too but my memory is fuzzy. It really sucks figuring out he was in the minority, also that he would’ve likely acted differently had I been a minority.

Cops on duty are agents of the state. The state should have no expectation of privacy whatsoever, because it is not a person who can possess or has a right to privacy in the first place.

Exactly. Where in the Constitution does it say that agents of the government are automatically granted rights to privacy? In fact, the First Amendment expressly states every citizen has a right to free speech, and that right includes videotaping cops, as the SCOTUS recently ruled.

        This lawsuit will go nowhere.

Well, technically it doesn’t say anything explicit in the Constitution about anyone having a right to privacy. Which in itself is distinct from having an expectation of privacy. An expectation of privacy just means that a reasonable person would think that their actions, or conversation, were taking place in a setting where they were not intended to be observed, and that someone doing so would have to more or less be trespassing in order to observe them (so, for example, even if you don’t intend for your conversation in a restaurant to be overheard, you have no expectation of privacy because the other diners and the staff have just as much right to be there as you do). It almost always refers to things that private people do within their private homes (although it can also apply to places like restrooms or dressing rooms in stores). I have never heard of anyone, state agent or no, who claimed to have an expectation of privacy in an open area of someone else’s property. It’s pretty ridiculous. Throw into it the fact that these are agents of the state, and that all actions of the state are presumed to take place in the public unless a specifically legislated exception applies (example: national security), and it’s absurd.

Why don't people just act as if they're always being filmed, which is pretty much true nowadays. It's no one's fault but their own, everyone wanted cameras everywhere for security, so now you're stuck with them. That's why liberals are such assholes, they never consider the consequences of all their screaming and hollering about different issues. Now they're all literally in conflict with each other and they don't know what to do with themselves.
