I have fucked in many hotels this past year with my submissive, and have a lady friend who puts us up in luxury hotels frequently for our rendezvous. I’m going with sex as the reason.

I was going to say there is NO FUCKING WAY I’d ever stay at a clown motel. Thank you for adding to the nightmare fuel.

How is this even possible given the rampant success of Air B’n’B and its ilk? Or is this like when Vogue claimed that TONS of people bought the Kimye issue, trying to prove just how healthy the magazine economy is despite the odds?

I think most people prefer to just book a hotel. Convenience (knowing what you are getting, customer service, not accidentally showing up to an orgy) trumps cost for a lot of people.

Certainly that’s a factor. If you book at a chain motel, you are guaranteed a level of service and daily room cleaning and an ice machine. You also don’t have to make awkward chit-chat in the owner’s kitchen.

On the tail end of a road trip, I planned to stay in Buffalo to see a rock and roll concert. One of the things I thought to myself was, “I’ll just get one of the several hundred available rooms when I trundle into Buffalo. It will be cheap. Everything will be fine and it will be cheap.” When I arrived in Buffalo, not a single hotel had a room available. The city I am talking about in this story is Buffalo, New York. When I walked around Buffalo, New York, I saw maybe 10 people outside on a beautiful Saturday.

This was a story about Buffalo, New York.

This may be one of my favorites of yours. Maybe people come to Buffalo for the hotels, so why be outside? Or maybe all the tenants are ghosts.

This was excellent. It really gave me a feel for what Buffalo, New York is like. Pure Poetry.

Low income housing. So most hotels do not require a credit check for you to stay there. I did a paper on this in college: with some hotels only charging $150 for a week, for poor people who cannot pass a credit check at an apartment complex it is cheaper and easier to pay weekly and monthly rates at a hotel instead.

There is one I drive by commonly on my way to work: tons of older cars and trucks. Some work vans. It’s poor people for whom $600 a month is cheaper than what they will get with poor credit. They can also pay cash at a lot of these hotels, where as most apartments require checks or debit cards.

$600/ mo wouldnt be bad for a couple... maybe a baby too? Cramped but at least you get clean towels every week and you get free TP and... I need to wash my towels, shit.

I agree. Rental prices are on the rise in most cities. For many people hotels are easier and cheaper, particularly if their situation is such that they can’t be sure they can pay to break a long lease.

What is it about hotels that is making them so full now?

Long term homeless people and insufficient supply of low income housing?

Exactly. I left a response to another comment to this story about my experiences trying to save money in LA by staying at cheaper motels.

The hotels are full because people get points for hotel stays so they are always making up reasons for business travel. Also nasty Craigslist sex.
