Oh, FFS. This whole bag check thing wouldn’t have anything to do with Delta Sigma Theta being a historically black sorority, would it? Naah!

/sarcasm, just in case you missed it

Since I know next to nothing about sororities, the history of this one escaped me. Now I’m having an “Of course!” moment.

And the fact they were in Texas. Surely a coincidence!

Irrational TSA guidelines caused this delay.

Yeah, from the headline I was expecting that the sisters had actually done something wrong, or at least strange.

Yeah, I was expecting a bunch of morning drunk, lululemon wearing sorority girls causing a kerfuffle. Not a bunch of alums at a national conference carrying GASP!!! BOOKS!!!! Meanwhile, didn’t the TSA just fail like 97% surprise tests of screening actual guns, knives and incendiary devices?

    Really though ? A book ?

Why didn’t they just announce “If you have one of these stupid books, please take it out and put it in a separate bin” or a poster with a similar announcement ?

Because institutionalized racism isn’t about logic.

I’m sure some pencil-dicked Texan “security expert” sprouted the hardest boner of his life over the prospect of hideously inconveniencing 13,000 Black students all at once.

“Bet them niggers will think twice before swarming MY airport again!”

      Fucking disgraceful.

And of course Delta Sigma Theta is primarily a black sorority.

Hmm, I wonder if the books would have been less suspicious if the sorority was founded by white girls...

It wasn’t founded by the girls at the airport -it was founded in 1913 - doubt too many of them were at the airport

Wtf are you serious? Were you trying to give me a history lessson I don’t need, or denying that the majority of the sorority sisters at the airport were black?? #missedthepoint

Due to their size, the booklets could be mistaken for explosives.

per TSA you are not allowed to bring big books on a plane, no more GofT books for you people on a plane.

As someone who has done both (not as a missionary, the bible was a textbook that term, we were treating it as historical literature of the Judaeo-Christian faiths) trust me, it was not the freaking books.

Travelers who were trying to depart Houston’s Hobby Airport...

Well, that’s your problem right there. The sorority should’ve booked their flights out of Houston’s Professional Airport, just 6.5 miles north. It might have cost, er, some money, but everyone involved would have taken the situation much more seriously.

When I lived in Houston I preferred Hobby. It was always so much easier to get in and out of. But then again I’m a young white woman so life is generally pretty easy for me when it comes to security screening.

It’s Saturday and nothing big has happened. Pretty much the definition of a slow news day.

(Also, commenting “Slow news day?” used to be an automatic permanent banning offense on Gawker sites. I miss those days.)
