“In the state of Israel freedom of choice of the individual is one of the basic values.”

Unless that choice involves wanting to leave, or perhaps live a life of dignity in, Gaza.

Religious zealots are the same all over the world. It’s why separation of church and state is so important and how secular humanism is one of the greatest philosophies the Enlightenment gave us. Funny how many people in the US would never admit that.

Is that picture of him stabbing a woman in the back? Yikes!

Fundamentalist Muslims, Christians and Jews are all dangerous psychotics (though admittedly, the Fundamentalist Muslims have decided to take the nuttiness to a new level). Nothing they do surprises me anymore. If they ever figure out that they actually kinda believe in the same thing and decide to team up, God helps us all then but thankfully, they’re too busy hating each other to figure it out!

Please don’t turn this abominable act into an excuse to beat up the Muslims. As a Jew, I’ve watched Judaism turn inexplicably toward right-wing fundamentalism that flies in the face of the ethics I was brought up to value and respect. This religiosity, fanatical oppression of others, and —- frankly what seems to me utter phoniness and posturing just shames me. Ultra-religious zealots have convinced themselves that it’s okay to inflict a 16th century lifestyle and mindset on women, children, secular people, and those they share the land with, yes, the Palestinians. They seem utterly brainwashed to me, as if they’ve joined a cult. I was always proud of being a Jew, but these fanatics who are grabbing power even in the army now don’t make me proud at all. They think some ancient neolithic deity gave them eternal permission to occupy the land of other people? Are they nuts? I feel very guilty over my attitude toward other Jews, but my own morals and sense of fairness, which Judaism instilled in me, take precedence.

The comment was a little awkwardly worded, but I read it as “Nothing [fundamentalist Muslims, Christians and Jews] do surprises me anymore..” So yeah, it called out Fundamentalist Muslims for having next level game, but was mostly it was just railing on about all crazy fundies.

Your confusion is understandable. All “orthodox” (let alone “ultra-orthodox”) religious adherents are capable of such arbitrary violence. (all that’s required is that some writing writ by someone sometime told them to hurt people and they could go to heaven)

When Yishai Schlissel was sentenced in 2006, it was to twelve years in prison. Few today would have thought that he was released already. They probably felt relatively safe.

He infamously refused to acknowledge the legitimacy of the court or even stand when asked. How do you give that type of person an early release?

In 2005 he stabbed 3 people at a gay pride parade, in 2015 he stabbed 6. How many people will Yishai stab in 2025?

This is a really interesting and damning quote:

“The writing was on the wall,” Channel 2’s reporter Moshe Nussbaum said. “Everybody knew, except the police… about Shissel’s intentions.”

I’ve started having a twitchy reaction to news of fatal or mass stabbings because I know I’ll be up all night arguing with gun nuts who get wet-palmed with excitement at the opportunity to rant in all caps about how SEE TAKING OUR GUNS AWAY ISNT THE ANSWER CUZ GUNS DONT KILL PEOPLE. Also, I just dislike stabbings for the usual reasons.

The fact that knives are less lethal than guns seems to be a difficult concept for gun nuts to grasp.

I think on this particular thread, the kneejerk is more of a “Israel is the worst” vibe than “see?! knives are bad too!”
