      White dude kills multiple people and gets called a “loner”, we’re told about his “troubled background”, his “estrangement from his family”, his mental illness, and his criminal history is a footnote at best. The photo they show is not a mugshot, but a family photo or something similar.

      Black man is *murdered* by the police and he gets called a thug, we’re told all about his alleged gang affiliations, fed lies about his court records (see the whole “Freddie Gray was just in a lawsuit about his spinal injury!!!” narrative), told about his criminal background (whether in arrest records, court proceedings, or alleged criminal activity), and we get an unflattering photo of them (usually a booking photo, if they have one)

    I’m sorry America is so fucked up. I don’t know if gun control laws can even help. It’s so much bigger than that. So much bigger. The Swiss have FAR more guns in households than Americans, yet one of the lowest homicide rates in the world. The social structure and individualistic culture of the U.S. is the actual problem. I’m not pro-firearms by ANY stretch, but I just don’t see that changing that will change much of anything. Americans just seem to hate each other for all sorts of reasons. I know I’m probably going to get a ton of hate for this comment, but I just think it’s worth adding to the dialogue and I’m prepared to take it.

      The Swiss don’t have more guns in households. Most Swiss men are required to join the army and keep their government-issued guns at home but not the ammunition, because there were too many murder-suicides with those guns. Moreover, they’re actually trained to use their guns in a well-regulated militia (gee! who would’ve thought of that idea?)

      its about this subset of powerless white men believing they are entitled to power, and that they need to do anything to get it (speaking specifically about mass shootings here, not inner-city gun issues which is really a completely different problem)

      but otherwise i agree with you. this really isn’t a gun problem (outside of the fact that it is too easy for these guys to buy them), its a cultural problem.

      i would be interested to see the social messaging regarding masculinity and power in Switzerland to see how it differs from the US.

      Your sarcasm is duly noted. Basically any person with real firearm training and a brain in their head who might be armed in that circumstance would not risk firing at the shooter in a crowded dark movie theater. The vast majority of gun owners in the united states are actually fairly reasonable people. Sadly the morons have the loudest voices.

      Hlariously (no not really) this is Louisiana. They have relaxed their gun laws to the point of courts should always assume someone has the right to have a gun, having a gun is a right in their state constitution. So frankly by their lax laws, there should have been...but there still wasn’t.

        After Columbine, Ft. Hood, Sandy Hook, Charleston, Chattanooga, Aurora, and Tucson..... I don’t know if I’m missing any mass shootings but I don’t think I want to know. The NRA goes way overboard so we’ll be too busy denouncing their nonsense to have a real discussion and they take the heat we need to be putting on gun manufacturers and lobbyists.

        Congress is in its pocket and just yesterday, Obama mentioned that his biggest failure as president is his inability to get any common sense gun control laws passed.

        I’m angry and there’s literally nothing I can do to stop this.
