Actual quote from the CNN article: “Still, theaters across the United States fundamentally remain freewheeling places, where ticket holders can wander in and out, unbothered by the intense security measures that now typify airports and public buildings.”

Right. Security is the problem. We should have to take off our shoes and go through metal detectors everywhere, just so dumb rednecks can have assault rifles next to their racist flags. Enough already, take the damn guns away.

No, you’re not taking them. Get that thorough your head now. There are different levels of firearms owners. This guy and others of his ilk and people like me. I support just about every progressive movement with the exception of ridiculous and arbitrary firearms laws like Mrs Fienstein’s 1994 assault weapon ban and its stillborn children.

I’m curious what his political affiliation has to do with this act of violence. I mean, I’m registered as an Independent in my home state (meaning I never get to vote in primaries; yeah, it’s one of those places), but that doesn’t mean anything about who I am apart from evincing that I find both parties to be distasteful, and prefer to vote for the individual I feel is least likely to fuck it all to hell and gone during the upcoming term of office.

Don’t get me wrong, I find the Tea Party to be a bit like the unhinged, tinfoil hat-wearing, bunker-digging cousin of the GOP, and their platform/message illogical to the point of farce—but pointing out that some jackwagon with a gun who killed a bunch of people was part of a given political movement (that has a history of talking a bunch of shit, but not a statistically significant history of violent actions resulting in the injury or death of others) strikes me as a pretty big red herring.

No, it could show his frame of mind. No red herring there.

In what sense would being part of the Tea Party (which ostensibly objects primarily to taxes they do not wish to pay, any form of government control over their lives/business—and people that aren’t white) demonstrate a frame of mind that would lead to a mass shooting in a movie theater?

Unless it can be demonstrated that he intended to kill people who voted for President Obama, or was, perhaps, fighting back against what he believed was government subsidies for picture houses, then his political affiliation really doesn’t signify in this particular event.

Again, affiliation here is more or less the definition of a red herring, pending evidence indicating that he was acting because of that affiliation. To say, “Well, he shot up a theater—but he was also in the Tea Party,” is not functionally different from saying, “Well, this person voted to protect GMO distribution for Monsanto, but they’re also a Liberal!” The action is not linked to the affiliation—the mention of affiliation is only intended to stir negative emotional response on top of an already heinous act (in the case of the murder; voting for or against GMOs doesn’t carry a moral weight, in my mind).

Will white American males stop shooting people, please? Will white American males stop sucking the cock shaped barrel of the NRA, please? Being a white American male is the easiest, least stressful thing in the world so there is no excuse for the anger. I know this because I have first hand knowledge about how fucking easy it is.

Yup; it’s a stupidly easy ride. It’d be awfully nice if my fellow white American males would stop behaving as if our toybox has been confiscated just because we’ve been told to share some of our blocks.

It took me 11 comments to find the abject white shame that accompanies 95% of Gawker posts; a new record!

You, sir, are the most progressive white person here this morning - kudos.

      Nah.

I would, however, support the idea of mandatory mental health examinations for first-time firearm purchases, and regular checks for purchases following (not every purchase, mind—but a sort of, “Oh, look, you’re purchasing your fifth easily-concealed handgun and twenty boxes of ammunition; maybe we should update our existing file, eh?”)

I’ve no issue with firearm ownership in this country (US); I know far too many responsible, sensible firearm owners to blame the tool (and I understand basic logic). What I do have an issue with is just how simple firearms are to acquire; we don’t need to lock them down, but we do need to improve our process for screening for folks who’re likely to lose their shit and abuse said firearms.

A new front on terroristic violence—did he choose this movie and target women? This is possibly his Twitter handle—but it could just be the twitter handle of one of a million angry folks on Twitter.

yeah, not entirely sure, searching on that username and some other things suggests it could be a different guy in Georgia, so I don’t think we can entirely leap to conclusions on that one.

Of the mass shootings in the US over the past two months, a number disproportionate to the population at large have been carried out by people that aren’t white.

OMG Stop. I really wish people would stop making excuses for skin bags full of rancid penis meat like this saying Oh he was depressed or he had a mental illness. A LOT of people are depressed and have mental illnesses but they don’t go shooting up strangers! And you know if he was middle eastern he’d be called a Terrorist and if he was black he’d be a Thug. But he’s white so excuses must be made.

So.... you think that happy, well-adjusted people go on killing sprees? Yea, murderers are "mentally ill", even if the news chooses to call them a terrorist or a thug for superficial reasons.
