I read an article yesterday about how Europeans are high tailing it to Cuba so they can see it before “the American spring breakers” get there.

Cuba, with it’s relatively crippled economy the past 50 years, has managed a medical breakthrough like that. Meanwhile, elements in the US want to eliminate healthcare for the non-rich and allow crunchy nutballs to let their unvaccinated children vomit their germs all over everyone including immunocompromised people and babies. And let’s not forget people finding every possible way to eliminate women’s health and reproductive choices....

Don't forget all the people against the Affordable Care Act aka Republicans. They probably also think this isn't a big deal because nobody they know could ever have to worry about getting HIV.

between this and the drug that can impede the ability to pass it between partners during unprotected sex (truvada) HIV may genuinely become eradicated from this world soon

I feel that due to the US political climate towards healthcare the US would become the hotbed for it while the rest of the world slowly eradicates it from their borders. Republicans will do everything they can to stifle the implementations of these drugs and protocols.

Maybe they’ll develop an effective vaccine for it, and 30 years from now 3rd wave anti-vaxxers will bring it roaring back to life.

I hear it is possible to eliminate HIV in a newborn if the HIV treatment is done ASAP or at least in one case this happened and they could no longer find the virus in a PCR test and a stronger version test.

The advancement was made through “prenatal care, HIV and syphilis testing for pregnant women and their partners, treatment for women who test positive and their babies, cesarean deliveries and breastfeeding substitution.”

This is great news, but these aren’t exactly new procedures, right? Presumably, if a women with healthcare access anywhere in the world 1) knew that she was HIV positive and 2) knew that she was pregnant, she’d be able to get a similar result. The hard part comes where there is no access to medical care, no awareness of HIV/pregnancy status, or a reason not to seek medical help (such as addiction).

Yeah, it seems the newsworthy part is that they were able to implement the care for all pregnant women with HIV, not the treatment itself.

I feel like a lot of people don’t know that mother-to-child transmission is nearly 100% preventable. I only know because I worked in the field for a few years.

It’s not so much a new advancement as an excellent execution of proticals we know can inhibit the transfer. Not that that mkes it any less commendable. This sort of all-encompassing preventative care is easier said than done. Good one everyone involved for pullingit off, and I hope the success continues.

It also has a free medical school (preference given to students that will return to work in impoverished communities). And a lung cancer vaccine.

Some interesting things going on over there.
