Autonomous cars, autonomous hotels... seems like the only job that will be left for future humans is blogging.

So I see Gawker’s ‘Say nothing on the horrifying David Geithner article we did and hope it goes away’. stance is still alive and well.

You people out a gay man for no reason at all and aided the man who was blackmailing him. I can’t believe you can just sit there now an say nothing. God, after all your articles on slut shamming and gay shamming and sex shamming, you I can’t believe you published it in the first place!

Not only that, but they are deleting all comments that even mention it. They tirelessly bash everyone on the internet, but when they screw up, they silence even their own comments section (ie the people who have supported them!).

Isn't this creating jobs at the company that makes the robots and all the companies that supply parts to them etc.? Technology is a double edged sword, it is both a creator and destroyer of jobs....

Yes an no, it creates some manufacturing jobs and definitely some service jobs, but represents the likelihood of a net job loss. If a hypothetical factory is mostly automated anyway and hypothetically makes the bellhop bot, then pretend 50 people make enough bellhop bots to replace 1,000 living bellhops in a year. Now, there are also service-people who make sure the bellhop bot runs, but they are not on site, they’re mobile and respond as needed, and there are definitely not 1,000 of them. Let’s say there is one service person for every 50 bellhop bots.

So you have 50 factory employees and 20 service employees, whereas before you had 1,000 bellhops. That’s a huge net loss of jobs (all hypothetically of course).

Add to that the fact that the service job requires more skills than being a bellhop, because I imagine servicing a robot at least requires some knowledge of electrical engineering, robotics and software, and now you’re eliminating low-skill jobs for high-skill jobs, which keeps low-skill workers out of the job market.

Except that you left out all the white collar employees, enigineers, marketing, sales, accounting people who wouldn’t be working at Robots inc. if no one bought robots. Multiply that by the supplier companies jobs that may or may not have existed prior. The other people license that robot technology for other recombinant innovations. I think the answer is unclear on whether this creates or destroys net jobs, especially when you change the timeframe from a short term to a long term analysis.

At the end of the day if technology does is cheaper the writing is on the wall, whether it creates or destroys jobs, adapt or be downsized...

“The robots aren’t a gimmick, the hotel’s owner told the Associated Press, but an earnest bid to save money. Unlike pesky humans, the bots don’t require payment for their services.”

the owner made the claim that the robots weren’t a gimmick, which is ridiculous. Given the cost of each of those robots, plus the cost of servicing and repairing them, and the cost of having actual people on hand to satisfy customer issues in the event that the robots can not, it can hardly be cheaper than maintaning a normal human staff. So I am just saying.....

I hope there isn’t one whose job is dusting the other robots. Imagine how eerie those receptionists will look in a year or two.

You know, it’s pretty terrible and unethical of you guys to keep deleting comments about your irresponsible article about the Conde Nast guy.

You’ve written countless articles about Reddit where you search deep into their comments to cherry-pick shit and use it to chastize Reddit as a whole. Now you’re pulling and deleting comments and censoring your own comments section (ie the people who have stood by you for years) so other news sources can’t do likewise. This site is now a fucking joke and will never have any moral high ground to stand on.

The only good thing about Gawker is they built in burner accounts. Think my normal account just got put on automatic dismiss. So I’ll just change burners all day.
