Ugh, police brutality is just so fiscally irresponsible.

Sadly it’s just about the only thing that might bring on some reforms...

This is outrageous! It’s just unconscionable that something like this could be allowed to happen. We need to all look past our differences and do something to address this serious problem. Tort reform now!

This is exactly what will happen. Hard caps on police misconduct suits will be on the books in short order.

Republicans: stop these killer cops or TAXES GO UP.

How many of the top 10 cities are run by Democrats, 9 out of 10? 10 out of 10?

Either how canst thou say to thy brother, Brother, let me pull out the mote that is in thine eye, when thou thyself beholdest not the beam that is in thine own eye? Thou hypocrite, cast out first the beam out of thine own eye, and then shalt thou see clearly to pull out the mote that is in thy brother’s eye.

Um… What does that have to do with anything? Do you think that the taxes go up, and only Democrats are going to have to pay them?

Republicans: stop these killer cops or TAXES GO UP. Just don’t forget there are dogs and pickles and later we’re going to play on the swingset. Stuff happens and I’m not sure if its all related. So in summation… Buffalo.

So, color me cynical, but won’t this just create an incentive for local governments to be more secretive about this type of crap? Isn’t this why they tried to bury that video of the guys getting shot when they just called the cops to track down their stolen bike?

I’m trying to think of what could really motivate change...I wanna say maybe doing something about the police unions? To retrain officers to be able to actually handle situations without just pulling their guns and yelling incomprehensibly until someone gets shot....and then getting rid of officers who can’t handle situations like a rational thinking human.

Your (very good) suggestions are the change. We still need a reason for them (to be forced) to change.

The settlement money in these cases is the end result of these cities being secretive. They pay out money to try too stop court cases that might bring greater scrutiny.

The broader citizenry can tolerate abuse of some minorities, but nobody like to see their property taxes raised.

Seems to me that the “tolerance” of egregious abuses of power within police forces has been on the wane for a while.

I think it’s not a drop in tolerance, but a drop in tolerance for being caught on video. Without the videos confirming a lot of this heinous shit, it would have been dropped by the news in a few days and quietly swept under the rug.

Oh sure, but that’s not really an option anymore. Or at least it’s less possible now.

Well for the bottom 99% anyway. Taxes won’t go up for the wealthy, as shown time and again. The poor will have to pay, as usual, with higher taxes hidden in increased costs for transit, cut programs when fiscal budgets can’t be met, disproportionate income tax, etc. etc.

So the fucks that will continue to be given is zero.

I hate how cynical and true this is. I also think that in order to provide disincentive for police brutality the police need to pay for their own insurance, like nurses do.

Unfortunately, still doesn't seem to be enough to change anything. Police unions are powerful in a really shitty way https://www.jacobinmag.com/2014/01/the-ba…

police brutality is costing cities a lot more money now.

It’s how we do ethics these days.
