Why do the police act in such a violent and cowardly fashion? If an EMT had been there with no police around they would not have felt in danger, they would have helped. What does a cop have to fear from a child having a seizure? Why do the police only know how to use violence? Why are sociopaths being hired as police officers?

Police should be forced to buy malpractice insurance, like doctors. Settlements wouldn’t have to be paid by taxpayer’s, and cops would be held personally responsible.

I think this is a good idea. I don’t know how it specifically works with doctors, but it seems like if you have a lot of “incidents” on your record, your insurance should go up...

If you have a lot of incidents you should be denied coverage and thereby kicked off the force

100% I can guarantee you what happened is the police show up to a chaotic situation, the girl is recently trampled on triggering her seizures and unable to assess the situation properly like a normal human fucking being. The officers determine the girl having a seizure not responding “correctly” to their demands is immediately deemed a threat and they taser her. I mean WHAT THE FUCKING FUCK. I can’t even deal with them going after the mother and mocking the girl, holy hell America.

Yeah, they probably told her “hands up” or whatever, and since she was having a seizure, she didn’t comply. She might’ve even been thrashing around from the seizure and hit a cop’s shoe! Clearly, a major threat......

Yeah - that’s what I’m thinking. They assumed she was just being disobedient or having a tantrum. Those fucking douchebags. Surely they weren’t in danger, and couldn’t have even perceived themselves in danger. I agree - being present when someone is having a seizure is goddamn terrifying (I have been there) - but the bystander isn’t fearing for THEIR life.

If she didn’t want to be tazed, she shouldn’t have committed a crime.

What crime? Uh, loitering and engaging in unregulated brain activity, I guess.

Every officer who used his taser should be charged with assault with a deadly weapon. This is beyond stunning incompetence. This is depraved indifference.

Seriously, WHAT THE FUCK DO NONE OF THESE ASSHOLES Have kids? Brains? Shred of decency?

I don’t have kids but I did go to high school with a girl who was epileptic, and it was scary (obs more for her, but we had hard concrete floors and metal/wood desks jammed very close together, as is wont in middle class public schools). We all knew how to respond if she had an attack, but the feeling of helplessness waiting for her to snap out of it is almost unfathomably far from “attack and mock”.

Just.... Fuck. We need to tear down our entire police training in this country and rebuild from fucking scratch.

There are two problems here. First, too many cops have substituted lack of compliance with threat level in deciding when to use force, mostly because they are pissed off they are not being obeyed.

But the most fundamental problem is police leadership (and prosecutors), refusing to hold cops accountable. I will bet none of these cops were fired, none were charged, and probably not even disciplined.

The day that this sort of behavior results in cops losing their pensions, is the day that cops will stop behaving like this. It’s that simple.

Poor girl, poor mother trying to get to her child...

Ugh, this is a heartbreaking story and I hope more details will come out soon so support can be given directly to this family.

In the mean time: ma’am and little miss, I hope you’re physically recovering from this gross injustice and soon get financial compensation for this abuse.

The real, real sad thing is that, while lawsuits sometimes lead to good policy change, the individual officers and their supervisors are rarely held accountable. It's always the city and taxpayers that foot the bill. I would love to see a law where damages from police brutality lawsuits come out of the PD pension fund...

I don’t really give a shit if the city and tax payers pay the bill.

Maybe it will make them wake up and ask questions, demand answers, and force the PD to enact those very changes.

an injunction against police to provide officers with “proper training and supervision.”

This is a slippery slope. What’s next, training teachers not to fuck their students?

When do we all stop acting surprised? This wasn’t cowardly cops or even negligent cops. It was sadistic, malicious cops.

The question remains: If there are more than a handful of good cops anywhere in this country, why do they continue to participate in this code of omerta?

You missed another absolutely fucking insane detail:

The officers then left her at the hospital and she was eventually released to a complete stranger.

      Also:

The suit says the girl still suffers panic attacks and nightmares as a result of the incident.

And then one more baffling detail:

All of the officers were apparently employed that night in off-duty security positions at Center Stage.
