City of NY thought that it was worth $6 million to not have to claim liability in Eric Garner’s death, but it still wasn’t worth charging the cop who murdered him.

Yeah not only did they not charge him, they didn’t even fire him. Just moved him to desk duty. And now he’s lobbying to get back on the beat. What job could you possibly cost your employer $6 million and still keep your employment status?

You want the real answer? It’s called a “union job.” It’s cases like this that give unions a bad name in America. But for the Police Union’s unconditional backing of this killer, he’d be off the force.

The City of New York settled with the family. That means either of two things:

    1. The city wanted to avoid a potentially lengthy trial they knew they would lose due to public sentiment. Or...
    2. The city knew that the officer did something wrong.

I’m going to go with “all of the above” here.

Nah, he did something wrong but they figured the family wouldn’t push the issue.

Huh? Then why not offer much less? NYC was concerned that the family was going to push the issue which is why they settled at $5.9M. They did not want the publicity of a trial.

At the rate we’re going with these murdering cops and big payouts, we’ll be living in an open-air debtor’s prison of ultra-high taxes and even more murdering cops and state surveillance by about the time Millenials reach retirement age and they can be turned into food.

Be fair: an open air debtor’s prison is better than those old kind....very next-gen. So that’s progress of a sort, right?

I for one am thrilled to pay my $1 in additional tax so that NYPD could escape a murder prosecution or an admission of guilt in using unlawful tactics to kill an unarmed man.

I just thank god we don’t need things like working transit or functional schools or public housing. Could you imagine?

And here come the assholes with the “but but but Garner was never going to earn that much money over his lifetime!” foolishness.

So speculation is stupid? You think he was going to earn that much? You’re against true statements? I don’t get what your point is.

The point is, that is a ridiculous argument against having to pay for the grief and misery and heartache the police put that family through. By that logic, if he was 99, the family gets what? $50?

I don’t think we really use the term “Red” anymore when we’re talking about people we don’t approve of. Communism is pretty dead at this point.

the City has not admitted liability.

City of New York has agreed to pay $5.9 million

LOL, fine. $5.9 million is about as close as NYC will ever come to admitting liability.

        Good.

About that whole “wants back on the force” thing... Not happening after -$6M. Enjoy the desk. It’s better than the needle you deserve.

But it’s a small price to pay for being kept safe from dangerous criminals like Eric Garner, right?
