This was a missed opportunity to talk about the problem of the gender binary. While it is FANTASTIC that people are finally more aware and accepting of transgender people, we’re still failing to recognize the problems inherent in imposing a rigid binary, instead of recognizing a spectrum where most people fall more towards one end or the other (and some people who are assigned to one end at birth, but really feel like their true place is somewhere else), but also plenty who feel most comfortable somewhere in the middle.

Accepting that some people assigned one gender at birth might want to transition to the other is great progress, but it doesn’t mean that any person who doesn’t align perfectly with their gender archetype must be the opposite gender. There are people who identify with both, neither, who are genderqueer or genderfluid (and people who are intersex, too).

A lot of the Jezebel readership is probably quite familiar with this stuff, but there are quite a lot who aren’t at all (as it became clear in all the conversations around Caitlyn Jenner’s transition). This would have been a perfect place to explain some of this, even just briefly.

I know a woman who is annoyingly intelligent who went off on trans surgeries. The gist is (according to her) that stats show there is a huge jump in suicude post surgery and now she believes that surgery for trans ppl is wrong and they should be treated for their mental illness (gender dysphoria I assume?). She rightfully got flamed for being hugely insensitive at a time when people in the trans community were enjoying an unprecedented amount of public support.

She was being a big jerk about it, but there were parts that I did agree with though I think for different reasons. You detailed pretty much exactly what I wanted to say but couldn’t quite figure out quite how to say it, and she’s a lawyer so if I used any terms incorrectly I would have automatically “lost.”

Anyways, yes. Surgery does not have to be the defining factor of transitioning. But instead of being publicly critical of trans people and calling them mentally ill, we should be more accepting of people however they present and identify. Our culture expects them to conform to fit our norms when as a culture we should abandon our norms and let people exist as they wish.

Did anyone else think her part on OITNB was kind of...blah? I was all jazzed about her and looking forward to her storyline and was disappointed.

I still want to be her friend though, mainly because of that Archer tattoo.

I saw Ruby’s video earlier this year. As a person who also identifies as gender fluid or genderqueer, and comfortable with female pronouns, I found her video to be terrific. I also chose not to transition, but feel male/female. Her video reminds me of some of the art by genderqueer artist Del LaGrace Volcano. I’m glad her presence is adding to genderfluid visibility and expanding the concept of what fluidity is.

      a) she looks so much like Romeo + Juliet era Leo that it’s frightening.

      b) I love everything about this video EXCEPT THE ACE BANDAGE. Do not use something like that to bind. Please please please let that not be the lesson people take away from the video.

Poor kids don’t save money in jars, dollars or cents, they have to give it to their parents to buy stuff the whole family needs.

Actually, sometimes we do. We’re not perfect, especially not at 5 years old, when we think 19 cents is enough to start saving for a surgery and that because we found it in the couch, it’s ours. And sometimes, poor parents don’t want to take the 19 cents away from a five year old to pay the bills because the thought of taking her dreams away is so fucking depressing it makes you want to cry in the dark without electricity.

dude there’s some really fucking weird responses to this article

like y’all loved her when she was “just” a super sexy lesbian lady
and now there’s a new narrative whereby she is gender non-conforming and uses male pronouns on some days and female pronouns on others and sees herself as non-binary and at one time hated herself so much she wanted to transition, but realised that actually she didn’t have to do that, that non-binary is a thing, and that she can be whoever she wants to be, that is making a lot of you uncomfortable

it’s also perfectly possible for children as young as kindergarten age to realise they are the “wrong” gender, so to speak, and although they may not be fully aware of what gender reassignment surgery is, if they were to watch something on the television about turning into the “right” gender then that is how they’d articulate it - saving up to turn into the right person. it’s arguing pedantics and it’s pretty gross that this commentariat who is usually very inclusive is being so dismissive

It seems to me that in trying to be progressive about trans people, the commentariat has really embraced the binary. Like you said, Ruby was awesome when she was a badass lesbian, and Ruby would be awesome if he were a trans dude, but to be in this liminal and fluid space gender-wise, that’s not so easy. In fact, I think there’s a bit of hostility in these comments, I think because they perceive Ruby’s “Well, I might have transitioned but I didn’t” story as weakening a trans person’s identity. Also, maybe, because you aren’t “supposed” to change your mind about these things? Because if you can then you have to allow for the possibility that some people transition prematurely or regret it, and I think that messes with Jezebel’s trans people as hero party line. So, instead, it’s easier to imply that Ruby didn’t know what she was talking about, is lying, and so on.

I was glad to see your comment.

honestly the implication that she was lying about wanting surgery and knowing that she was trans or non-conforming is just so disgusting, frankly. it’s kinda like, oohh yeah i find a lesbian sexy, i’m an edgy straight chick - but now she’s not a lesbian woman, she’s a genderfluid lesbian, things are a bit different and it is making people question themselves a bit which is coming over all a bit hostile. on the other hand there is a lot of support from other commenters which i’m pleased to see, but some of the comments are just so freakin weird i feel like i’ve stepped over onto gawker not jez ya know?

I said this in response to another comment, but it bears repeating for the group at large. To the people saying there’s no way she’d save for gender reassignment surgery at 5:

Children with gender dysmorphia typically start identifying as the other gender very, very young - as early as toddler-hood. So, yes, she probably wanted to be a boy at the age of 5.

As a five-year-old, her takeaway from the Oprah episode was probably not “saving for gender reassignment surgery” but a more simplified version. Something like “oh, there’s this thing that if you have enough money, you can pay and they turn you into a boy”
