Stingrays scare the fuck out of me but this is really sad. I’ve swam with them a few times and they are pretty incredible up close, but terrifying.

It is sad but I agree with you. They’re one of those animals that scream “alien invasion!” to me, along with Snakes and Spiders. I can’t even look at a picture of any of them without my skin crawling.

Do they even bother with the “scallop” grift anymore? I see Skate (despite being heavily overfished, while rays are plentiful) on every fucking menu, usually in brown butter and capers. Kudos to the chef that can make it edible, but it you can usually smell the ammonia from across the dining room.

Bull shit explanation from the zoo. Oxygen level drops are a result of other problems not attended to over time. The exhibit’s water chemistry was probably way off as a result of improper maintenance, purification before adding new water etc. and that resulted in toxins building up and oxygen levels dropping due to sick and dying rays.

Having worked at this zoo before I can say that this isn’t all that surprising. The couple seasons I worked there I know they killed off a lot of the stingrays because it was too hot. Around half would make it through the summer. Then when the season would end a handful more would die during transportation.

They’ve had this exhibit continuously for at least seven years and it’s always been healthy and successful. Not everything is some super secret conspiracy by “big Zoo”. Shit happens.

Probably not, people don't seem to know where morality ends and wasteful begins in sad situations.

The only ray of hope is that other zoos will check their equipment thoroughly to prevent another tragedy.

Maybe leave the stingrays IN THE FUCKING OCEAN?? Ever think of that? Not putting them in a concentration camp in the first place? Poor creatures.
