Who discriminates when selling their house? I’m selling to the highest bidder. Period.

(I’m by no means disagreeing with the point of this article. That particular detail just struck me as odd.)

Real estate agents can steer certain races of buyers to certain neighborhoods.

Lots of people. As a black person trying to buy something right now I shop with a white friend who poses as me so I can see the same places.

If I don’t do that, the things I get to see are much more “selective,” if you understand my meaning.

I mean, most people don't even fucking talk to their neighbors, so what the hell difference would it make what color they are?

But if you let people of color live in your community then you don't know which ones you're allowed to shoot for being in your neighborhood

It’s code for “the property values will drop.” Following the money is rarely a bad idea, and it’s definitely a good one in this case.

As an old, I distinctly remember my parents selling their house in the 70s and the neighbors pointing out that they had an "understanding" in the neighborhood that they wouldn't sell to black people. "Screw them," my dad said. "Black people's money is as green as whites and this place is going to the highest offer."

When I lived in Houston in the 70’s, my dad told me there was a clause in our neighborhood association contract forbidding sales to blacks. Oh, and Mexicans (of course!).

He wasn’t happy about it either.

In other news, at least 28% of whites “are garbage people”, “should not be allowed to share populated areas with other non-garbage human beings.”

Its not 28%. Its much much higher. Its only 28% that will admit it on a survey.

I am currently shopping for an apartment to buy, and I am definately getting steered. I have had to recruit a white friend to help me see listings (he has similar income as me and gets listings, I go in with him soon after and demand to see the same places).

Heck my sister moved into a white neighborhood in January, and I stay over the weekend sometimes and I get nasty looks while running in the mornings.

Oh yes, that’s why I said at least 28%. That’s just the numbers we have on white people who are garbage enough to admit to being garbage to other people.

My parents dealt with discrimination pretty much every time they moved. My parents are an interracial couple, so they knew when they got married in the 1970s, that they would deal with discrimination. In the 1980s, they had made an offer on a house and it was accepted. Apparently the seller’s neighbors found out that we are an interracial family and pressured the seller to get out of the deal. My parents agreed to end the deal to avoid intimidation from the neighbors. They ended up with a different house, and one family tried to cause problems with us. I guess they thought throwing crap at our house made them superior or something. But all it did was disgust all the other neighbors.

“....and blacks should respect that.” Racist assholes: “ We believe you are not a human being worthy of dignity or guaranteed rights, and when I look at you I see a possessed demon that needs to be shot in the face. Look, I’m not racist, I have a black friend in Canada, it’s just that I hate you because you are buying lobster with your food stamps and gobbling up welfare dollars and generally scaring me.” Black American; “ I respect that."

Don’t you know that getting pissed off at racist fuckheads is *exactly* the same as being a racist fuckhead? If you don’t respect their racist fuckheaded opinions, you’re just fighting hate with hate, man. How can you ask others to be tolerant if you’re sooo intolerant yourself?!?

      (Because internet...yes, that is sarcasm)

I see a lot of people talking about experiencing discrimination they have experienced in the comments. My question is, is this mostly happening in small cities or is this still a major issue in major metropolitan cities? I live in LA and every area I have lived in is incredibly diverse so I am trying to convince myself that its mostly an “everywhere else” issue, but I realize that is naive.

Haha—Chicago. This city loves to tout that it is a “City of Neighborhoods.” Really strictly enforced ethnic enclaves, because segregation (including within racial groups) sets up a good feudal power structure for the Machine.

California, at least the bits I have visited, is incredibly diverse.

I’m moving to Los Feliz in a few months from NYC and have been wondering if this will be a problem for me as I look for an apartment. I’m “Latino” and while I wouldn’t call Los Feliz a “White neighborhood”, from what I’ve seen personally, it doesn’t have as many PoC as say Echo Park, Highland Park or even Atwater Village.

You live in LA, what’s you’re opinion?

Correction: 28% will admit it. The real percentage is likely higher. Define “innundation”. My guess = two non-white families.

Exactly. I was shocked the percentage wasn’t higher. And I’m assuming a white family that looks “ethnic” would suffice for one of those two non-white families.

So 28% is the maximum percentage of Americans that could be considered Libertarians. Since opposing the Fair Housing Act is a pretty typical Libertarian position.
