That’s funny. Gene Kelly also awakened my sexuality, proving to me just how much I enjoyed butts. Look at that butt.

Someone made this comparison on either the Slate Culture Gabfest or NPR’s Pop Culture Happy Hour right after Tatum’s GQ cover last year (Fred Astaire was mentioned too, I think?). And Rolling Stone’s latest piece on him opens with a Gene Kelly quote.

So, I guess he’s Gene Kelly now.

He can dance and act and has one up on Gene Kelly in the being a decent guy department. Not sure if he can sing but I am not really interested in finding out.

I just saw Magic Mike XXL in that 25 theater movie theater off Times Square last night.
All I see is Channing Tatum dancing when I close my eyelids.

Did not read article. Watched video only of Channing Tatum.

    Brain melted.

This is why I tell myself I haven’t watched Magic Mike yet. I am afraid I’ll go into some sort of shock out of my mind’s inability to understand how he moves like that and my explicit inability to handle any of it.

You and HamNo do this where you act like dipshits as some sort of blog commentary performance. It’s...odd. If comments are so wretched shouldn’t gawker just remove that feature?

I’m straight male and also love watching Gene Kelly bust moves on the big screen. Singing in the Rain never gets old, especially with the Kelly and Donald O’Connor combo. If I remember correctly Kelly was very adamant in trying to promote dancing to everyone, and that it wasn’t just women and gay men but I think he was more annoyed than anything else that he was being pigeonholed. And yeah for all accounts he could be a huge dick.

It really has nothing to do with straight or gay, it has to do with showing power, finesse, control (dominance) and confidence. Most of the male teacher dancers on dancing with the stars show this in their dancing, and I have no idea what their sexuality is.

Only other person that comes to mind that can dance like Gene Kelly and also had the star power behind him was Patrick Swayze. Christopher Walken isn’t bad either. Tatum is up there though, wish he’d do something other than stripper moves. Would love to see some Gene Kelly-esque routines from him.

I’m a gay man, and myself and a few other gay men went to see Magic Mike XXL, and wow, were we ever disappointed. Where was the actual dancing, because I sure didn’t see much. What I DID see seemed to be a bit aggressive towards the women involved. Especially in the final dance number where the woman litterally tried to NOT get on the stage. Maybe becuase I’m not a woman I didn’t register the sexy filter, and this film was VERY much geared towards the ladies (more so than the first). But I found myself mostly uncomfortable with the dance numbers in the latest film. It registered more on a 50 Shades of Grey level than a Singing in the Rain.. Just one man’s opinion.

Hey, I know I’m going on a bit of a tangent here, but: Do you remember the semi-followup movie to “Saturday Night Fever”, “Stayin’ Alive”, circa 1982-3? In it, John Travolta’s character was supposed to be a stage dancer.

A friend of mine with some dance training couldn’t “buy” the “informed ability” of the character’s talent, because—and I quote—”John Travolta can’t dance as well as the real dancers doing backup behind him” and “there are so few full-body camera shots”. Then, naturally, the conversation veered towards how Fred Astaire didn’t need MTV-style jumpcuts to look good.

So, is there a musical movie from “long ago” (sic) that Magic Mike’s dancing registers closer to? Or does the “uncomfortable” simply outweight the dancing, make it too hard to watch?

Different strokes/different folks, and so on. All I’m saying is, I’m not inclined to accept that Gene Kelly was an asshole solely based on one unspecific post of self-described hearsay by some rando on an internet bulletin board.

For the record as a homosexual I just want to say that I can’t dance nor do I know anyone that can. Even the drag queen I know is dancing deficient.
