I want to like Trevor Noah, a lot, I just... I don’t know, I feel like Jessica Williams would have been far better (even though she didn’t want the job).

But I’ll definitely give him the benefit of the doubt for the first month or two.

Yeah, I fear the Craig Kilborn is strong with this one. :(

Apparently it was offered to Louis CK, Amy Poehler, and Amy Schumer and they all turned it down...which makes me worry that this a nuclear hot potato no one wanted to hold for a reason.

I gave up trying to watch this at 2:15. Seinfeld is the most boring person on the planet. Also, love his “color-blind” note in the beginning, “Trevor Noah has a rich background of many cultures, colors, and languages. But none of that matters. To me he is just a funny guy.” Racism is over, everybody! I mean, race doesn’t matter to a wealthy, white man? Who would have thought! Congratulations to Jerry Seinfeld: Racism ender.

I really don’t get Seinfeld’s appeal, or his continued appeal. I feel like people liked him sooooo much in the 80s and just can’t let go of their love for him.

I love Seinfeld the tv show, despite it’s issues. Seinfeld the person is pretty much a poster (man-)child for rich male privilege. As a stand up comedian I can’t even be bothered with him.

Watch Jerry Seinfeld try to explain to Trevor Noah why there were no black people on his TV show, except for the token “sassy black woman.”

Was there a “sassy black woman” regular on Seinfeld?

Watch Jerry Seinfeld explain to Trevor Noah that it’s perfectly natural for a man in his 30's to date and sleep with a 17 high school student because, “She was really mature for her age, and I’m just a kid at heart.”

Jessica was a newlywed when she and Jerry started. I know that adultery is a two way street (or maybe one way since he wasn’t cheating) but he’s made some odd choices in his romantic pursuits.

I like this series, but i find I like Jerry Seinfeld less and less with each episode. How does a guy who was an adult in the 80s and 90s know so little about apartheid...?

Why would he have cared? By all accounts he was possessed of a single-minded focus on his career and comedy—which was never/has never been topical or dealt with any sort of social issues. His comedy may as well be called “First World Problems Humor”.

I think there’s real value in certain kinds of social media protest, but it makes perfect sense to me that coming from SA Trevor would give it side eye - there, protests that actually made change on the most important issues of the day were all protests where the protestors took enormous risks for what they beleived in. Hashtags might seem a little insufficient to the change-making process in the face of that, without him having to be painted as clueless or an asshole.

Protests usually rely on a few main things:

      Disruption

      Message

      Numbers

      Attention

Protesting in the streets disrupts traffic and daily life, people send messages through signs and chants, try to amass a great number of people, in order to gain the attention of public servants, the public, for a certain cause that is deemed worthy of all of these things. By these criteria, Hashtactivism is a legitimate protest, but it is less disruptive of daily life, forcing people to pay attention, even for a moment, to the cause so many are standing for- which is why we need, and do often have, both demonstrations in the streets, and online speech. Both matter and are legitimate because there are many reasons why some people may not be able to physically be outside, but are still taking risks by speaking out- such as those with disabilities, etc.

Seems to be a trend when it comes to Trevor Noah and TDS...

I wish you’d included the excerpts where Trever Noah talked about his mother having to pretend to be his father’s Maid in order to be seen with him in public. Or about how there were ‘White’, ‘Black’ and ‘Colored’ people and they couldn’t mix.

I’ve only seen a few episodes of Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee, and they were from a couple years ago, but my impression was that the title should be Comedians Aren’t As Funny As They Think They Are.
