“Woo woo, America! You are still a garbage country but we appreciate you allowing us do some of the things we want to do.”

Seriously though, garbage country? We have a whole lot of problems here and I’m not going to pretend otherwise but I think that we’re still better off than a lot of places because A. people are talking more and more about issues openly and don’t just get shunted off to a work camp for it and B. Good things continue to still happen like gay marriage.

Maybe slow that bitterness roll up a bit.

We are better off than a lot of people in a lot of countries. I don’t want to get all Lee Greenwood on y’all, but the fact someone can type “garbage country” on an unrestricted internet which people can read on free WiFi in a public library kinda disproves the point.

Yeah that point wasn’t lost on me either! We got a whole lot of shit to still work on and our history isn’t awesome but we’re also talking about a lot accomplished in a much shorter time period and we are still moving forward. Sometimes with a few backwards steps but still better than the places that don't even allow outside Internet or stone women for showing their ankles.

During last night’s Saturday Night Social, the question was, “Why are you proud to be an American?” And someone responded, “Well, I’m black, sooo......”

This has been on my mind all day. There is no country that I can think of where black people are treated poorly simply because they are black except for America. Are there racial problems in other countries? Sure. But it isn’t as bad as it is here, especially where I live in the south. I don’t think things are all that much different for transgender people, and maybe even worse. America has a long way to go. We have a lot of garbage to sift through to get this right.

I am still proud to be an American. Unfortunately, my moments of pride come when the majority are “outraged because this country is going to hell”.

Either you didnt’ read my entire post, or you’ve never lived in the deep south. The Dominican Republic has nothing on the black hatred that lives here.

How are we a garbage country? That’s a pretty massive generalization, don’t you think? There are lots of wonderful people out there in America. Just because they don’t get a lot of play on Gawker Media doesn’t mean they don’t exist. Please don’t lump us all in with the crazies. Thank you.

Seems that some of these Jez writers who haven’t been here since the beginning like to get a bit mouthy every now and then. It’s very off-putting, but I was an asshole when I was younger, too. I’m not perfect now, but I’m sure as shit not as bad as I used to be.

Yeah I get the feeling that since there is a lot of new writers, there is a lot of YOUNG writers who say things without fully thinking through how they will come off.

This is so ‘monkey see, monkey do’ but damn, I want an old American flag to frame and hang on my wall! I wonder if that flag has a special Olympics significance?

That’s what I was thinking, that’s the flag from the Olympic games, which is hella cool.

My flag isn’t that old, but it occurred to me as I was hanging it up this year that we bought it right after September 11th. We were newlyweds. That is almost 14 years ago now. Someday it will be an old flag. Trippy!

Caitlyn’s flag is probably from the 1976 Olympic games, which is amazing. I remember that too.

This is one of the first 4th of July’s in a LONG time where I actually felt somewhat patriotic and proud to live here. Like damn, we still have a LOT of problems (hello institutionalized racism and sexism, I am looking at you), but we just passed marriage equality and I feel like we’re actually making some progress.
The Caitlyn Jenner thing wasn’t really in my mind at all, but that’s another point in our favor.

Don’t get me wrong—we have a lot of issues. Like, A LOT. Still, I count my blessings that I was born in the United States:

        1. Homosexuality is not punishable by death.
        2. As a woman, I can drive, I can go outside without a male escort, and I can vote.
        3. Oh yeah, I’m not gonna get stoned to death or beheaded either.

“What could have been a study in hate ended up being just the opposite”

Wait now... there was/is a METRIC FUCK-TON of hate, though and it hasn’t ended or let up yet. One could, in fact, do a study in the hate. let’s be perfectly honest here. Come now. Really depends on where you look, doesn’t it? Let’s not start celebrating like we converted anyone here. Those who were/are down already were. Nothing has changed except that random nobodies in my life want to explain/excuse their transphobia to me more regularly now that they have a celebrity reference to point to.

Agreed. Anyone who thinks there hasn’t been a huge amount of sneering, contemptuous hatred and ridicule towards Caitlyn Jenner, on social media and elsewhere, hasn’t been paying attention. Never mind towards other trans people.

More depressing than the typical idiots is the “I’ve suffered more” competition in the TG community that some seem to want to have. “Caitlyn’s famous, it’s easy for her” and so on. My friend killed herself last year so I guess she wins in the suffering. I wish she was here to collect her award. I know she would have been happy for Caitlyn.
