She also has some smart things to say about abstinence-only education: http://thinkprogress.org/health/2013/05...

Thank you for the link. Ms. Smart is very right on, especially in this example, explaining how the concept of “sexual purity” factored into her decision not to run-

“Smart spoke at a Johns Hopkins human trafficking forum, saying she was raised in a religious household and recalled a school teacher who spoke once about abstinence and compared sex to chewing gum.

“I thought, ‘Oh, my gosh, I’m that chewed up piece of gum, nobody re-chews a piece of gum, you throw it away.’ And that’s how easy it is to feel like you no longer have worth, you no longer have value,” Smart said. “Why would it even be worth screaming out? Why would it even make a difference if you are rescued? Your life still has no value.”

This reminded me of something I saw on an episode of Wife Swap. The Christian mom wanted to help her host family by explaining to the girls how important abstinence is. Her plan was to unwrap a candy bar and pass it around the family in a circle. After it was good and sticky, the plan was to ask someone to eat it, demonstrating that no one wants a candy bar that has been passed around. Keep it in the wrapper, girls!

Flames on the side of my face, yo. Elizabeth Smart is amazing, and females are strong as hell. Part of what she talks about is that every child should know that they have value, no matter what happens to them. No one can take that away.

Yeah, my 10th grade sex ed class did a similar thing with a rose that we passed around and each took a petal off of (gross). It was weird, because it wasn’t even an abstinence-only curriculum, but they were required to bring in an abstinence speaker. I wrote him a very strongly-worded letter about how he was being super fucking presumptuous to assume that we all had the same values he did - my parents had both me and my brother out of wedlock, on purpose, and raised me to believe that sex should be an important part of a healthy relationship, so he and his rose could fuck right off.

Elizabeth Smart is a woman of unthinkable courage and strength. She has chosen the most noble path possible. Her activism for children who have been raped and sexually abused has no doubt saved countless lives and helped to begin the process of mending damaged souls. She is doing the single most important thing to end the silence surrounding sexual violence, presenting herself, without shame, refusing to be a victim, telling others that it’s ok. What happened to you was not your fault. Your life is yours. Bless her.

I wish the Duggar girls read her book and interviews, because their religion has made them feel shame and guilt of their own sexual abuse. I’m sure there is still this heavy load that they are carrying even after marriage.

I haven’t seen this show because it strikes me that kidnapping with a side of sexual assault/abuse is a positively bizarre choice for the premise of a comedy show.

It is bizarre, and yet....it works? I’m not surprised NBC et al passed on it, but the cast and comedy are solid and it never shies away from the fact that life CAN be shitty. Bad things can happen to people, and they survive. Somehow they keep the right balance - hopefully they can maintain it in season 2.

It’s uses comedy to make really incisive commentary about rape culture, actually. I loved it.

I love this show so much. I’ve already binge-watched like 4 times, and every time I find something funny that I hadn’t noticed before. I love the random, weird humor, and the overall message “Life is tough but so are we.”

I thought the inspiration was the women taken by Ariel Castro. It’s just such a dark subject matter and they managed to turn something like that into a comedy with a very powerful message. I love it.

Kimmy Schmidt restored my faith in black comedy. Toss those Family Guy rape jokes in the trash and bring back the real black comedies that make incisive observations about their subject matter!

Unfortunately they had a lot of inspiration to pick from. Seems like the situation was inspired by Ariel Castro and Warren Jeffs (the insane preacher part), but Kimmy herself is like Elizabeth Smart.

I don’t think I’d be that well adjusted after a similar life event. Hell, I’m not an optimistic or well adjusted person *now*

I think it's about Elizabeth Smart, but also Tina Fey who survived a knife attack at 4 ish.
