I’m not american, but since this is your holiday and all, i thought it fitting to ask you people a question about your country.

in american movies and tv, people never say goodbye when they hang up the phone. Do you guys really end your phone calls like that in real life? it’s so hostile. how do you manage to run your society like this?

Anybody else not have plans for the 4th? Let’s commiserate!

I don’t have plans bc it’s ramadan. By the time I get to eat the fireworks will have exploded and the bbq all eaten. I also hope to be asleep by 1030 but I doubt the neighbor’s kids are going to let that happen. Youths... -_-

I do not have plans because I am single and all my friends are coupled. So I am the extra wheel, which I didn’t want to be. I am at home drinking wine and Jezebel-ing.

I hate the DIY fireworks that go on and on and on. Or the drunk idiots walking around tossing firecrackers around and shooting off bottle rockets.

We have a different 4th because it’s my son’s birthday.

Hey Jezzies! Long time reader, first time account-maker-and-commenter. I’m actually British, but in the States for the summer on a grad school exchange (hence the display name.) All my new grad school friends have left town to go and visit families etc so tonight I’m celebrating my first official Independence Day alone! Sad face. I’m cooking burgers (on the stove, boo) and drinking beer. Any other loners out there?

This 4th has been surreal so far. Yesterday a group of guys tried to follow me home. And this morning I spent with my family before heading to DC. I get there, and my friends ditch me.”, and I get caught in the rain, and soaked. So I went to the museums by myself. And now, I’m waiting for the fireworks before heading home.

So, any way I can use my Gaysian Persuasion to salvage the night?

Yes, I will become the gay Asian male version of Taylor Swift, and I will make a country pop crossover. It's the perfect plan, but who will be my manager?

And just how are “we” trying to better ourselves? You act as though the average joe has a say in what goes down here. We are controlled by a select group of mostly white, mostly male millionaires who have no conception of what it’s like for regular people.

I have a question. So it’s hot as fuck in the PNW right now and my cat, who is both beautiful and an asshole refuses to keep hydrated. He’s an indoor cat and I’m trying to keep him cool with the windows open and a fan running, but I have never seen him ever go near his full, clean water dish. He’s been really lethargic, which I guess is understandable and has been badgering me for more wet food constantly. I’ve definitely been giving him more, bc I think that’s his only fluid source, but I cant keep pumping him full of delicious wet food like he’s some kind of pate goose. Do any other cat owners have suggestion of getting your cat to drink some damn water?

If you can afford it, get kitty a water fountain - a lot of cats prefer running water.

I’m proud to live in a country where the majority recognizes that EVERYONE has rights. The right to love, the right to marry, the right to choose, even the right to be a hateful bigot. While yes, there are people who believe in their right to discriminate & say ignorant things, there are even more who believe all people deserve to be happy & love whoever they choose.

...I’m also proud to live in a country that runs the Twilight Zone for 24 hours every 4th of July...

Can you actually be proud of something over which you had no control? I was born here, but not by choice, so what should I be proud of?

Immigrants, they choose to be Americans, they are those who have the right to be proud of their country.

Many of us are from immigrant families. Maybe we feel pride because of that.

This picture was taken in 1907 I think. These are Spaniards boarding a ship bound for Hawaii. My family was on board. 57 passengers died of the measles. 56 of them were children.

The next picture was taken in my grandmother’s village in Spain. This is how people there washed their clothes. When my grandmother visited in the 70s, they were still doing it this way.

You bet my ass I’m glad to be here. I’m not saying you should be proud to be an American, but I am.

I mean, people who take pride in almost any nexus of their identity did not choose that identity; I didn’t choose to be born a woman or Jewish; I’m also proud of my family’s history, of my parents and brothers and niece; I am NOT sure how I feel about being an American, but it’s not because I didn’t choose to be born here. I’m also an adult who has not chose to leave, and never plan to (I mean, I travel, but this will always be home).

All I’m going to say is there are so many countries where I could not exist. I am a female, educated, single, able to own my own property, my own money, choose who I socialize with and date, work at a job, drive a car, vote, and above all, I can criticize my government as openly as I want. We ain’t perfect, but we’re doing some things right. And we’ve always, ALWAYS moved to better ourselves. May the pains of our country right now continue on that trend, and we come out with everyone even freer and better for it.

Well said. I agree with everything you say, but in my case I’m a gay man. In half the countries on earth I’d be dead by now. In America? I can be married.

Agree completely. I’m a 35 year old female atheist who doesn’t want (or particularly like) children. And while plenty of people in my smallish Ohio town disagree with my beliefs/how I choose to live my life, I am thankful that they don’t want to kill me for it.

I am freedoming this week in my hometown, which I usually can’t get out of quickly enough, and I spent last night celebrating my nephew’s 15th birthday with him and his friends. (Yes, I am the cool uncle who takes them out waterskiing on the boat and introduces them to the music of Talking Heads and The Ramones.) All is well so far, which is kind of why I’m proud to be an American: I can be sitting here on the couch, watching the sun set over the Berkshires (everyone else is at Tanglewood tonight to see James Taylor), writing my young adult mystery novel, and drinking a glass of wine while waiting for the fireworks to appear over the roof of the neighbor’s house.

Oh, and I’m doing laundry, too, for freedom.
