Just a reminder: your insurance plan very, very likely covers adult MMR boosters totally free (thanks, Obama!).

Several months ago, I popped over to Walgreens, handed over my insurance card, waited five minutes for the pharmacist to get a second, and got my MMR booster without paying a thing. Seriously: go get your booster.

Beyond the fact it’s important to stay boosted, the reality is that when more of us openly get vaccines— especially as adults— and openly discuss it, it helps silence this sort of nonsense. I’ve had probably a dozen vaccines in the last few years (I travel a lot) and have had literally no ill effects (I mean, I guess my arm was kind of sore with the MMR one). Staying vaccinated- and talking about staying vaccinated openly- is key to shutting down this nonsense.

When there was the measles outbreak due to non vaccinated folks going to Disney, I made a very awkward/paranoid phone call to my doctor about my MMR booster since I work in tourism and people are gross.

It really went down like Lady: Hello this is Bernd’s doctors office. Me: THIS IS BERND AM I VACCINATED IS MY MMR UP TO DATE CAUSE IT NEEDS TO BE.

It wasn’t my finest moment. But the good news is the nurse was very nice and commiserated with my concern AND I was up to date on all of them.

I've got my MMR booster and flu vaccines from the pharmacy. In my state, there is a database that keeps track of vaccines. I think I'm up to date.

What gets me is that the “VACCINES CAUSE AUTISMMMMM” crowd is basically saying that having a child with autism is worse than having a child who becomes deathly ill with measles (or whooping cough, or whatever) and possibly dies. How is a child with autism worse than a DEAD CHILD?

Note: in no way do I actually believe that vaccines cause autism. But even if they did, wouldn’t autism be preferable to suffering and death?

Yeah, it’s incredibly ableist and offensive. My mom and sister both work with autistic kids, and they love their students and take great joy in their accomplishments.

Maybe, just maybe, if we spent less time/money/effort researching the nonexistent link between vaccines and autism, or “vaccine injuries”, and more on developing better early childhood interventions, teaching strategies, and medications, we could make life better and more productive for the beautiful, worthy of love autistic kids we already have.

A family acquaintance is a “champion” for the anti-vaxx movement. It pleases me so much that she’s going to have to homeschool her kids next school year. Not because she’s a good person... But because she FINALLY will have to start paying attention to her kids instead of focusing her efforts elsewhere.

Depending on what grades they are supposed to be in, you should really fuck with her. Like if they are studying something in Math like the basics of addition, ask them if they know their times tables. If they are studying the founding of America, ask them if they know about the French/Indian War. Don’t try and blow their minds or anything, but give them that one extra push to something more advanced that will make her have to work a little more to produce a lesson.

Silver lining of progress: a comments thread on an article like this 5 years ago would have been littered with people defending and promoting anti-vax idiocy. Its refreshing to click through it now and see universal scorn from Jezebel readers. The anti-vaxxers at least realize that they can’t win on a forum like this anymore. Possibly indicative of a gradual shift against them over time in the larger society? Or maybe nothing.

I know they’ll interpret the tide of resistance as being silenced and marginalized and just dig in their heels more.

      Good.

They should be silenced and marginalized, because not all speech is worthy of broadcast, and theirs is killing people.

Clearly she died from mercury poisoning that she got from drinking municipal water, that was fluorinated from the chem trails, that were created by government pilots, that were brainwashed by the illuminati, who put the subliminal messages in pop music.

    Obviously.

That poor woman. This is why anti-vaxxers make me so angry. My father has a weakened immune system due to chemotherapy and cancer medications. And there are millions of people with similar problems who are vulnerable to these diseases. I fear this death will be the first of many. It is a shame that people have to die as a result of such selfishness.

They don’t care. There was some anti-monsanto demonstration a few months back and an anti vaxxer was dragged away from counter protesters yelling “My child is more important than you!”

At the end of the day most of them are entitled helicopter parents. Its why I hate the whole “grizzly momma bear" meme....it ends up being an excuse to be a giant asshole.

How dare you bring reasonable concerns about cancer into this when the special snowflakes in my life are at risk of toxins.

Oh, wait, all the special snowflakes in my life have been vaccinated! Because my friends and family are smart and have things like advanced degrees in science/medicine and do things like work with kids with autism.

Saw this today and thought people should be informed.

Kinja has shrunk it so in case you can’t read: the orange lines is the total number of Jim Carrey movies the blue line is cases of Autism per 1000.

“the victim likely contracted measles when she visited a health facility at which someone with measles was present. The victim’s immune system was already compromised due to medications she was taking, so the disease didn’t have a hard time taking hold. The woman died of pneumonia, which has been ruled a complication of the measles.”

    How depressing.

This, right here, shows the utter selfishness and complete disregard for others inherent in the anti-vax position.

It’s really not just about your precious petals ladies and gents, it’s about the wider community, it really is.

Should there ever be any significant outbreak (I really hope there isn’t) I hope a few of these celebs somehow get sued blind for encouraging such recklessness.

I’ve become immunocompromised just in the past few months, and this stuff scares the shit out of me. It’s scary enough having to run away every time someone sneezes near me in public, I don’t have to worry about this shit too.

But the worst part? No more raw oysters.

And fuck the people who are so fucking stupid they side-eye my dear friend when she tries to contain her son’s ASD outbursts. I’ve was with her once when someone had the fucking nerve to say, “So... vaccinations?” And said it with such condescension and “knowing.” I wanted to rip the woman’s throat out and yet my friend replied, “Yes, aren’t we lucky that we have them? Can you imagine if my son had to deal with measles in addition to a sensory disorder and ASD? Most likely, he would be dead.” And then stared the woman dead-on for several minutes until she walked away.
