I haven’t seen anything on Gawker about your own unionization efforts since the election (I may have just missed it, of course). Any updates there? What were the next steps after it passed?

We picked reps from each site to form a bargaining committee, and we’ve started the (very) preliminary work of deciding what we want to bargain for, and eventually we will have formal negotiations with the company for a contract. It will take a while.

Seriously, Hamilton, that it has already spread to another publication, is pretty sweet sauce.

      Well done, man.

One more online media union and it’s an official trend story.

So you guys were willing pawns in what WGA-E wanted, which was more members paying dues by expanding to the Internet?

I am pro-union but from the open thread and this immediate fallout, WGA seems shady as hell

I think it’s more correct to call it a mutually beneficial relationship. Gawker staffers wanted to unionize and the WGA-E wanted to establish a foothold on the Internet. Nothing necessarily wrong with either thing, I think.

As I stated below, I would have voted “Yes,” and unions “coming back” would be a good thing.

However, there is something about seeing people willfully being used that is off-putting

Fucking awesome. Finally! More of this and fewer “content producers” pooping out “aggregation” stories please. Journalism needs it.

I used to like that website. It used to have the Sports and Technology beats covered, and seemed generally interested in reasonable political discussion.

Just look at the homepage today, or any other day. Republicans Stink, Everyone is Racist and Corporations are Bad - delivered in the screechiest possible tone.

What irks me is they love to bash the rich, despite their survival depends on annual donations from a few Silicon Valley billionaires who made their fortune from the 90’s Dot Com Boom. Salon has never made a dime in its 20-year existence and you’d think they would place their office in a city cheaper than SF.
