It would be nice to see DeBlasio grow a backbone and pull out the stops and stand up to the bullshit that’s been filtering out of the apparently hopelessly corrupt state “government” in Albany.

Let me get this straight. Preet Baharra goes after the corrupt officials that Cuomo allegedly presides over (two of the three men in the room, no less), so King Andrew decides to back up MTA funding, pull some bullshit shenanigans on schools, lets rent control lapse, tries to ram through 421a again for his developer buddies, and does everything to cut off the hand that feeds? And the response from DeBlasio is “I think you’re being a bully, stop plz? :)”

    Yeah, OK.

How about bringing up all the other shit that Albany is forcing the communities down here to deal with? For a “tenant advocate” mayor, DeBlasio blows. Give me a fucking break. You want political points for ushering through a rent freeze? Yeah that’s gonna be a lot of help for the people that have those apartments - for a year. But by the way, thanks for caving in on deregulation, and vacancy control, and 421a, and affordable housing mandates, and all the other shit that you promised to keep the city affordable to anyone making less than $200k a year or already in a rent stabilized unit.

DeBlasio sucks. As a “developer’s mayor” Bloomberg did a lot more for tenants. Fucking awful.

I mean this without any sarcasm: what exactly would you have deBlasio do? He doesn’t rule by fiat. Other than stating his displeasure, what action would you suggest he take?

      1) He could actually bring up what was supposed to be the cornerstone of his campaign (tenants) in his statement about Cuomo
      2) He could stop asking Albany for things politely or trying to be rational with them
      3) He could leverage things like 421a, which Albany wants more than anything
      4) I give zero fucks if he resorts to Chris Christie-ism and cancels the Poughkeepsie Metro North service for the rest of the year
      5) He could stand up to developers at things like zoning hearings and say that minimum affordable unit numbers are not negotiable
      6) He could afford to piss off REBNY, because right now no matter how much money they give him his constituents hate him enough not to re-elect him
      7) He could stop touring the country like he’s some kind of draw for out of town people to listen to
      8) He could take a trip to anywhere in the city that isn’t full of WASP-ey NIMBYS.

Albany is definitely fucked but let’s stop pretending that DeBlasio is giving it 110%. He’s not.

De Blasio wants leverage and real executive power, and Cuomo knows that getting it will come at his expense. Simple as that. Trouble is, Cuomo is a legacy idiot who has no capacity for leadership and a vision for government that hasn’t been updated since the Clinton Administration. De Blasio’s sporadic liberal backbone isn’t ideal, but it’s a damn sight better. I hope this is the beginning of a genuine sea change, and not a one-time eruption.

I think it’s more petty than that. Cuomo is genuinely threatened by De Blasio’s spotlight, and as soon as he was elected mayor, Cuomo started this passive-aggressive bullshit. It’s not so much about the power that De Blasio wants in order to control the fate of the city he governs (not an unreasonable thing), but it’s about the prospect of being overshadowed by a more charismatic Dem.

Which doesn’t make sense on two fronts. 1) A piece of paper is more charismatic than Cuomo, and he has to know this. 2) De Blasio seems to have no larger ambitions, so what’s the threat to Cuomo?

Maybe it’s just pure fucking ego? Maybe Cuomo doesn’t care that De Blasio’s more charismatic and is satisfied with his current office. Maybe Cuomo just hates being shown up. I don’t know. All I ever see when I look at Cuomo is an overgrown manchild dressing up in his daddy’s clothes.

De Blasio is 100% right and Cuomo is a little shit (Cuomo even bears some responsibility for the chaotic manhunt for the prison escapees). But I’m not sure the first year of a 4-year term is the most productive time to do this. Cuomo already hates the citizens of New York City and wants the city to be worse than Bloomberg’s wettest teenage dream. But I’m not sure how calling him out is going to do much good at this moment. He’s not running again, if at all, until 2018. So he doesn’t give a shit.

And it’s about time. With any luck, Preet Bharara will complete the trifecta and remove this POS from office for us.

Once again, why don’t we just secede already? Assuming we can work out a deal with NY for water (which would provide them with much-needed revenue), it’s a little annoying that our robust city government is handcuffed by NYS on many issues. As a city we have some serious issues that we’re going to need to deal with in the next few years, namely the MTA capital plan. We’ve seen a massive increase in ridership over the past few years, and a decrease in service. Many subway lines are in need of serious repair, and on the east side of manhattan the 4-5-6 is severely overloaded.

“That was clearly politically motivated,” Mr. de Blasio said, “and that was revenge for some perceived slight.”

Glad Bill finally found some cajones, but it would be even better if he called it like it is: de Blasio and Cuomo have been at odds since day one b/c Cuomo is a conservative asshole.

Has he gone rogue because he’s given up and will be heading to the private sector, or does he think he think pissing off Cuomo and the Clintons will garner support as an independent whose sole focus is the betterment of the city?

I think he’s realized that as much as he tries, the media and Albany and the police are never going to side with him. He’s going to go down as an idealist one-term mayor and he might as well be honest. It’s a shame because I think that he is trying to do what he thinks is best for the city and he has no shot with those powers lined up against him.

I think he is recognizing that Cuomo picked this fight a year ago, and it’s about time he step into the ring.
