You’re vaccinated? Haha, joke’s on you. My cousin who lives in Indonesia wasn’t vaccinated and got polio as a kid. She walks (barely) with a limp and one side of her body is twisted and shorter than the other, and she has difficulty talking... wait, where’s the punchline?

Well, and between you and the school you wanted to send your unvaccinated child to. Don’t worry, myself and other parents are positively thrilled you didn’t get your way this time. Have fun home schooling!

Many years ago I lost my first baby to SIDS. This was a couple weeks after her first round of vaccinations. A person pointed this connection out to me shortly after the funeral. I hit that person in the face.

When Baby Gothick was born a few years later, I had her vaccinated according to the regular schedule recommended by her pediatrician. I would never even contemplated not having her vaccinated. What is wrong with these anti-vax people.

And in some situations it IS mandated for individuals to be given psychiatric drugs, even if it’s against their will. Court orders of mandatory psychiatric care will do that (I don’t know if that’s the actual legal term, but it’s effectively what it is).

Can we talk about what an amazing Governor Jerry Brown is? I mean, he’s not perfect, but he was handed a shit sandwich from the Terminator and has quietly done a fantastic job slowly righting things.

As a Californian, the most notable change is how little we actually hear from our Governor. When Arnold was in charge, he was always parading around on TV, spouting nonsense. You couldn’t avoid it. While Brown obviously speaks out on things, I just get the distinct impression he’s up in Sacramento solving problems and not courting the media.

    Rock on, Jerry. <3

Ok so... much like Otto, my dad was also vaccine-injured. My dad contracted polio from the polio vaccine, and narrowly escaped paralysis or death. It took a decade for him to recover his weight, and it was nothing short of miraculous.

All the same, my siblings and I were all fully vaccinated. My dad recognized the very remote, distant possibility of what happened to him happening again versus the very real possibility of one of us getting polio from not being vaccinated, and made his choice accordingly.

For our parents, it was all about probability math.

Thank you, that’s such an important perspective and I’m sorry that happened to your dad. I can’t understand why this particular generation demands 0% risk when there’s no such thing! There’s significant risk you’ll get in a car accident but people drive every day. There’s risk with every single surgery, no matter how minor, from tonsils out to wisdom teeth, that doesn’t mean we should stop surgery full stop. It’s important to value probability math and think of the odds and the greater good.

Not that long ago, I saw an article about a child who had a vaccine injury and ended up severely brain damaged from the MMR when she was 12 months old. This was a few weeks before my baby was turning 1. Despite the fact that my 8 year old is fully vaccinated, I admit, it kind of freaked me out. I read about vaccine injury and it’s real and it’s scary. I am a pretty rational and evidence based person, so I know that it is statistically more likely that my child will get a vaccine preventable illness than suffer a vaccine injury. She got the MMR shot but I was still worried.

Okay people, anti-vaxxers and pro-vaxxers (do we call us that?) alike, this is why we need punctuation. This tweet is basically gibberish.

There are no vaccine police. Your health is still between your Doctor [and yourself], behind exam room doors.

Okay this is probably gonna get buried, but here’s my proposition:

If these people don’t want to vaccinate their kids, fine - let’s make a law saying that if you don’t vaccinate your kids, you will be held financially responsible for any medical costs of anyone who gets sick and comes into contact with your carrier-ridden, unvaccinated spawn. On top of that, let’s make it so that if someone who comes into contact with your kid and DIES because of them being unvaccinated, then the parents are responsible for any legal damages and financial burdens that may ensue. For some icing on the cake let’s also say that if their kids are unvaccinated and they bring them to a crowded area (like a theme park), that the parent must pay for the medical bills of anyone else who gets sick and comes into contact with the unvaccinated kid.

Betcha this anti-vax crap would stop real fast. Alas, this will never happen. These people need to get a fucking life and pick up a damn science book.

Wouldn’t even bother trying to find out who was the cause; just send portions of the total bill to every anti-vaxxer household.

It’s like getting a ticket from a speeding camera that you didn’t notice, but with more “Fuck your feelings, nutjob.”
