In a weird way, I consider this a win for the opponents of marriage equality as well because it’s over with. It’s done. It’s decided. You can go home now. Put your pitchforks and banjos down.

And for them, it can go away just as they do. People have been telling these people for years that gay marriage won’t affect them. And now that it’s the law of the land, they’ll get to truly see that it probably doesn’t have even the tiniest impact in their lives beyond what threats they might imagine; though their imagination I suspect has been the largest contributor to their bigotry from the get-go.

I’m not naive enough to think they’ll just shut up about it, but at least now we’ll know that anyone who takes umbrage with the decision from now on has thoroughly injected themselves into hopeless discourse.

They lost against Obamacare more than 100 times in Congress (seriously, a repeal has been proposed more than *100 times*) and twice in Supreme Court and massively in a public election, and yet they KEEP INSISTING that they will fight “tooth and nail” to repeal it.

So no, they won’t go home. They won’t.

This is not going away. Roe v Wade didn’t go away. This will continue to be a huge issue in American politics.

Personally, I am very ok with the ruling and don’t think legal recognition of marriage should have been restricted. But to those who will always think a same-sex marriage is different than an opposite marriage, they have a point. Legal equality doesn’t make them the same thing - one can produce children and the other can’t. They are different, and no ruling (however justifiable) can change that.

That isn’t even true. Old people of opposite sexes can marry, but cannot produce children. Sterile people can marry and can’t produce children. Gay women can conceive via sperm donor. Gay men can have a child via surrogate. Marriage is marriage and as far as I know, the ability to produce a child has never been a requirement for a marriage license. I wouldn’t have gotten one had that been the case as I needed IVF to have my children.

Why do children matter? You don’t need to be married in order to have children. You aren’t forced to have children once you get married. You aren’t banned from getting married or considered “differently married” if you marry someone who is infertile. So what, exactly, is your point?

Yay! Down with the constitution! That is what we’re celebrating, right? And when ISIS comes and tosses you off a skyscraper, I hope you remember how you “myopically” celebrated the dismantling of it.

“I know that Americans of goodwill continue to hold a wide range of views on this issue. Opposition in some cases has been based on sincere and deeply-held beliefs. All of us who welcome today’s news should be mindful of that fact. Recognize different viewpoints, revere our deep commitment to religious freedom.”

god i can’t fucking stand this kind of wishy-washy, insincere, blatantly false bullshit

appealing to decency or whatever is not always a virtue, and not everyone’s viewpoints inherently deserve respect

I don’t believe it’s insincere; in fact, I think Obama is one of the most earnest, sincere politicians I’ve ever seen in my lifetime. He means this.

And as he probably should; it is no small thing for the Court to do what it did today. Irrationally (because what else are religious beliefs?), some people believe — and will likely continue to believe —that same-sex relationships are forbidden by their faith. I’m not particularly sympathetic, but I think respect for religious faith and general decency suggest that we show a bit of humility while we take our victory lap.

Just a bit though. Because seriously, fuck these guys.

i’m not saying stand at the podium and grab your nuts; more along the lines of acknowledging that this is an ongoing civil rights process that’s far from over, and allowing any leeway for/sugarcoating of the kind of hateful bullshit that would prolong that process is hard to defend

Today was a 500-pound pie in the face for Anita Bryant’s ilk. If only I had a time machine to bring her back from 1977 to 2015.

I agree - I’m not being “mindful” of their beliefs. Their beliefs have caused true, large-scale damage to countless people and families. Their beliefs are not important to me. Just like my beliefs, and the beliefs of other respectable people, they are personally held and should be kept that way. I respect their right to have them but just because someone *believes* something does not mean I have to live my fucking life being “mindful” of them. Obama, I love you but we could have left out that little part.

What’s telling is that my Facebook feed has been 100% supportive. A number of the people I grew up with are Tea Party dumbass types that hate Obama, but here in the Northeast, they are also pro gay marriage. Sadly I can only experience conservative tears from afar.

Eh, sure, but I don’t give a shit about the conservatives or their tears. IMO, they were on the wrong side of history and tried to make this issue about them. Today proved that it isn’t.

Opposition in some cases has been based on sincere and deeply-held beliefs.

And if I was gay I would sincerely and deeply hold my husband’s dick in my mouth in celebration of them losing.

But since I’m not, all I can do is spike the football on the internet. Which still feels pretty good.
