More power to her. If you’re for reproductive choice then respect her choice. I’m sure she didn’t make it lightly.

You can respect her choice while still not respecting her one bit as a person and making fun of her. I see no contradiction in that.

I do not want any lectures and I do not want any sympathy.

Well, you’re going to get none of the latter and loads of the former, you abstinence-preaching, no-sex-til-marriage-screaming charlatan. Look, if you wag your finger in the face of anyone who doesn’t follow your hypocritical bullshit and then all of a sudden show up pregnant without a ring and squeak “Pretty pretty please don’t lecture me?,” you deserve all the condemnation you get.

I don’t have any particular fondness for the Palin family, but this strikes me as an unfair way to interpret what she’s said.

Maybe, I guess, but how else would you logically interpret it? As far as baby announcements go, this one reeks of bitterness and obligation.

That family isn’t Catholic. Is there another religion of which they might be a part (or just ignorance) that forbids the pill?

Now she’s put it out there publicly that she dreads having this child. What forethought this girl’s got!

I was wondering that too. I think there are smaller Christian sects that bar birth control. But, generally, that’s a fringe and a Catholic thing, right?

Unfortunately, many evangelical Christians (such as the Duggars) believe that the pill can kill a fertilized egg. While that’s a tiny, tiny possibility (b.c. works by thickening the cervical mucus and thereby stopping sperm and it also prevents ovulation, so if an egg and sperm meet after that it’s almost a miracle) that’s what got Michelle Duggar on her track.

Why do I have sympathy for her? I abhor her mother, and everything they all stand for. And yet, I feel bad for her somehow.

You probably feel bad for her because her parents are trash. But you shouldn’t, because her ass is 24 fucking years old and she has the gall to lecture other people about abstinence when she can’t do it herself.

She’s a grown-ass woman now; she has the ability to look outside of her bubble of family crazy, see how the rest of the world functions, and make decisions for herself. But she chooses to go along with an ideology that clearly makes her miserable. I only feel bad for her insofar as I wouldn’t want to be her.

To be fair only two cities here have enough population to merit a Planned Parenthood. Which is really sad because sex education is a joke in the schools here and the STI rates are unbelievably high.

“I know this has been, and will be, a huge disappointment to my family, to my close friends, and to many of you.”

Honestly Ms. Palin, you’re fine. No disappointment from me. Nothing wrong with having a baby if you want to.

Here’s the thing your family will probably never admit though, your ability to not give a hoot about the perception of an unmarried mother has contributed to the drop in abortion rates.

Since a leading cause of abortion was the social stigma attached to an out of wedlock pregnancy, not giving a rats ass about what some patriarchal shame machine has to say about you has led to more babies born to loving mothers.

Give them the finger from me.

Yeah, because the final deciding factor on whether or not to have an abortion is “Bristol Palin is a single mom”.

Is the daddy that guy she was engaged to that turned out to be a fraud, or whatever? And I thought I picked terrible men, amirite?! Word to future parents of daughters: this is what happens when you try to indoctrinate them, instead of letting them find their own way (within reason, of course); when you tell them that God is gonna hold their hand if they fuck up, instead of giving them the tools to not fuck up in the first place; and, if you shelter them from the consequences of their actions, instead of allowing them to experience them up close and personal so they don’t perform the same actions repeatedly.

Yes, if you connect the dots: 1. wedding suddenly cancelled => 2. she’s pregnant, it sure seems to imply that she was fooling around with somebody on the side, got pregnant, and her husband-to-be then broke the engagement when he found out.
