This is just the latest and greatest example of “You calling me out for being a shithead makes you a shithead.” The Cosby story the other day was the same. http://jezebel.com/bill-cosbys-la... What is with this trend in today’s world? I feel like this is a new thing.

I just made a similar comment, but I got Kinja-ed. I’m so tired of the notion that calling out rape, violence, and shitty behavior is anti-male. It’s anti-asshole. We’re trying to have a society here.

      No.

      It’s always been around.
Just now they realize they can make a public statement off it, rally some other shitheads behind them, maybe make a bit of money, and try to make women look bad all at the same time.

Nungesser is alleging that he suffered harm to his “physical well-being, emotional and psychological damages, damages to reputation, past and future economic losses, loss of educational and athletic opportunities, and loss of future career prospects.”

Well, Dude, I can’t help you. I guess you shouldn’t have sexually assaulted her. Hey at least you’re not in jail, where you should be.

How was his physical well-being harmed? He wasn’t the one assaulted. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: victims of rape need to start suing their rapists. When the criminal system fails you, it’s time to look to civil.

EXACTLY. And yeah that ‘physical well-being’ claim stuck in my craw too.

Also, the bar is much lower in civil than criminal, which helps.

Preeetty sure she wants universities to take sexual assault more seriously. I mean, didn’t she have to endure four hours of interrogation, while Paul only had to be there for less than an hour? How is that fair?

(my memory's a little shaky on this but I know I would be furious if I did not get the same amount of questions on both sides from the same damn panel)

How is investigating rape allegations “gender-biased”? It seems like the lawyer is arguing all men are rapists and all rapists are men.

Yeah I really wish his lawyers didn’t frame it like that and just brought out the real questions in this case like why was she allowed violate the confidentiality agreement consequence free? Why was she allowed to use the Mattress Project for school credit? How does one get awarded Magna Cum Laude not based on grades? Making it a gender just makes him and his lawyers sound like a bunch of MRAs and to quote Leslie Knopfe, men’s rights is not a thing.

Can I ask a dumb question[s]? So why do lawyers take on cases where their defendant definitely did do something horrible? How can they argue on behalf of that person? Like for the Boston Bomber, I know he has a right to have lawyers and a fair trial but who would want to defend him?

You can’t be seriously comparing this case with the Boston Bomber case! Everyone deserves a fair trial and a lawyer because the Central Park Five are not such a weird and rare occurrence.

I think you can look at it a couple ways. A public defender job is to defend those who can’t defend themselves, and he or she should try to believe their client in order to give them the best defense possible. There’s the belief that isn’t really justice unless both sides are fairly represented. To some extent, I think it’s kind of like asking “why do doctors treat horrible people?” Because it’s part of your duty as a doctor to provide medicine, regardless of who you think is most deserving. Same thing for law, everyone deserves a fair trial, competent representation, otherwise it isn’t justice.

      Defendant Columbia also awarded Emma Sulkowicz Magna Cum Laude honors, which is not based on grade point average;

Yeah my thoughts exactly. Is this a thing? Can someone who went to a college with a non-grade point based honors system confirm this? All our honors were based on grade point average.

And if Columbia didn’t do this then why would these lawyers make this claim?

She did not name him at any point. He outed himself and has a history of sexual assault - he slandered and libeled himself. Perhaps he can sue himself, too.
