Cash has been “on the way out” for decades.

I think arguing against women on money because cash is becoming obsolete is a little disingenuous. While things like the penny and, arguably, the $1 bill, are probably on the way out (let’s join every other country and make the dollar coin a more normalized thing!), I don’t think we’re just going to get rid of other bills anytime soon. Since that’s the case, we should definitely have a woman somewhere in regular circulation (lol that sounds funny out of context) to both honor the important contribution of women to our history and also to more fully reflect the country’s population. Unless we go the way of Costa Rica and just put adorable animals on our currency, which I would fully support.

I agree with her other argument, though.

while I agree with the rest of your post...have you ever lived somewhere where dollar-equivalent coins (to the exculsion of paper dollars) are a thing? you cannot buy enough star bars to make your wallet manageable.

I would argue that Andrew Jackson was more horrible than Alexander Hamilton and deserves his money status revoked. Come at me Jackson lovers...

You know, I sort of hope that there are people prowling the Internet ready to defend the sacred name of Andrew Jackson. Best of luck if/when they arrive. I will say that if the argument of whether or not he had a really good head of hair comes up, you should concede and shift the discussion. Dude was coiffed.

This is probably one of the safest challenges you can make. Here’s another good one for you: “I would argue that Pepin the Short was a more effective steward of Francia than his father, Charles Martel. Come get some, Charles Martel fans!”

Yeah... I’ve been having a hard time getting excited about this because while sure it probably is about damn time, it just feels like an incredibly empty gesture to me. “Look we put a lady on the ten dollar bill, see how progressive we are!”....”okay sure now how about equal pay, reproductive rights, and generally being treated like human beings rather than objects?.....anyone? no, okay....”

Not to mention, they’ll still be printing bills with Jackson on it...so it’s all BS.

        I’m torn.

On the one hand I support the gender and racial diversification of people who appear on money. On the other hand a lot of the oppression that women and Black people have to deal with is rooted in and perpetuated by capitalism, so I’m wary of reducing important figures to symbols of the system that screws them over.
