Why exactly does it seem to be protocol to “slow things down” when it comes to revealing the facts in cases like these? There’s no reason why it should have taken this long for the autopsy conclusions to be made public, except to ensure that the fallout would be as clean as possible for the cops and the city administration. They’re trying to use social inertia to make sure that those cops receive the least punishment possible for what they did.

I think depraved heart murders are exactly the right charge for a situation like a “rough ride” gone wrong. For those who don’t know what the term means, a depraved heart murder is essentially a situation where you don’t intend to kill someone, but you end up doing so because the thing you were doing has such a high likelihood that someone will be killed.

Some other classic examples of depraved heart (also know as “depraved indifference” because the killer had a depraved indifference towards the consequences of his actions) murders would be dropping a brick off of an overpass, and the brick hits a car and causes the drive to swerve into the wall and die. Or deliberately firing a gun into a wall in an apartment complex, and the bullet hits someone in another room and kills them. Or, in one well-known case, setting up a game of Russian Roulette where a friend was killed.

Basically, the murder charges are appropriate, because the cops didn’t intend to kill Freddy Grey, they just acted with so little care for his life that when they took actions that were likely to injure someone, and he died, they murdered him.

I have been handcuffed in the back of an ambulance several times. Every time I have been belted in and they were not trying to deliberately injure me during the ride. However, you do not realize how much you use your arms and the rest of your body to stabilize yourself in a moving vehicle until you do not have use of them. It must have been absolutely terrifying during that ride, because you will just fly around. I can’t imagine the terror during that ride knowing that you had no way to stop it. Everyone must have heard his screams, and to have ignored them and continued is truly horrific behavior.

Hmmm...when I think of a “high-energy” spinal injury, I’m thinking of something more like this:

Gray tested positively for opiates and cannabinoids upon his arrival at the Maryland Shock Trauma Center, according to the autopsy.

According to Sean Hannity we shouldn't rush to judgement.

Unless we’re judging a 12 year old black kid just shot to death while holding a toy gun, or a 16 year old skinny black girl who was just manhandled into the ground by a 200lb cop, amirite?

Wasn’t the “$7.4 million” not actually awarded, though, due to tort reform? I as under the impression that the family only got something like $350,000 due to Maryland’s cap.
