He’s not wrong, is he? We are sick and the sickness is self-inflicted. Old down home racism is in that stupid flag the redneck Carolinians refuse to lower from their capitol and it’s pervasive.

The great mistake or ancestors made was to go Easy on the south after the civil war. They should have hung every man that volunteered to fight against the Union including, no... starting with Jeff Davis and Robert E. Lee just to make a point. Fuck those treasonous Southern bastards and their slavery-rebellion.

Sherman should have burned the entire region to the ground.

How dare you lump all Southerners in with rednecks and racists in the wake of one of the worst episodes of depraved violence in recent history. 46,000 South Carolinians of all walks of life marched to move that damn flag off our state house in the early 2000’s against 6,000 white confederate flag supporters. To say it is a problem is spot on, to say we are all supporters of some lost racist rebellion is blatantly false.

Our community is hurting very badly and we will heal together as one people. I can tell you the people of Charleston and South Carolina are doing some soul searching and most are doing everything they can to help those worst afflicted by all this. We just went through a terrible tragedy. If you think you’re angry, imagine how we feel. They were our people killed. Don’t be so reactionary and use our community and our dead as a talking point for why you don’t like the South. We don’t progress as a country like that.

Americans have internalized the idea that racism is bad, without ever accepting that they’re racist. So, the average American’s thought process goes something like this:

    Racism is bad

    I am a good person

    Therefore, I am not racist

Once that line of logic has been completed, all the arguments in the world can’t overcome their rationalization and willful blindness.

I never considered this perspective, and it makes SO. MUCH. SENSE.

      Really perfect insight, thank you.

This thinking works the other way too; “oh Chatham is a good person, therefore those racist jokes of his can’t really be racist.” Sigh...

But, Jon Stewart told us in 2010 that the problem was partisanship and that the real bad guys were on “both sides”!

He held a rally and everything! People laughed at the concept that there were actual, real life Nazis in America!

Because they haven’t yet been reconstructed.

Bring back Reconstruction law. Yesterday. Bring these backwards provinces to heel before they set off a second Civil War.

“But nine people shot in a church— ‘Hey, what are you going go to do? Crazy is as crazy is, right?’

Not trying to prove his point, but people on my FB page seemed more upset by Jon Snow being killed than these 9 victims.

Meh. I suggested he was crazy and got attacked on Gawker. Meanwhile, on my FB page, I’ve seen nothing but CrossFit posts and pictures of the victims of this racist fuck.

ETA: Sorry I used the word ‘meh’.

Seriously, who brings these racist loser trolls out of the grey and elevates them to the top comment? WTF is wrong with people that they can’t resist taking the bait of such a stupid fucking loser? Look at his comment history — racist and right wing shit like “beaner” all over it. Why even respond to a person like this? You think you’re going to turn them around with how devestating your response is? Of course not — you’re giving them the one thing they desperately need — attention.

    FUCKING IGNORE THEM.

I love the response of these folks, too... their vitriol and rage... it’s almost as if they’re also trolls, just trying to fire Troll #1 up all the more. Surely, their words will persuade this internet-dwelling fiend to either reconsider his poor choices in life or shuffle off from this realm into the abyss of Oblivion.

Agreed. I really enjoy cruising down to the grays and seeing what gold I might find, but I enjoy just as much (if not more) seeing the dumb trolls spouting vitriol, languishing in the grays. They feed off attention and inciting anger, ignoring them is the best weapon.

I think you should really really really reconsider everything you know if Jon Stewart is your moral center.

Somewhere out there in flyover country, a doppleganger of you is saying the same thing about Rush Limbaugh.

It is just as horrifying to me.

Rachel Maddow also had some excellent coverage of the shooting fallout on her show last night.

She showed great footage that PBS dug up of one of the victims, Pastor Clemente; talked about the history of churches like his being burned down from decades of attacks; and she also covered how yesterday Debbie Dills, a florist, trailed the suspect for 35 miles, calling the police after recognizing his car...and his ridiculous hair.

Her coverage is most notable in the way that she focuses on the victims and heroes of the situation, and avoids saying the name of the suspect over and over and showing lots of photos of him any more than necessary. Very sharp and prescient of her, from a mass-psychology standpoint. Too bad other news orgs aren’t doing the same across the country, instead they’re setting up the next nutball by making this one so iconic...

This morning on the train I sat opposite a woman reading the Post Express. The shooter’s shitbag face was plastered across the entire front cover, staring me in the face for my entire 30-minute ride. I wanted to rip the paper out of her hands and shred his image into a thousand tiny pieces.

I’d really love it if we salted the earth after every mass shooting. Announce the shooter’s name, show his photo (mostly so the dozen other people in the country with the same name won’t be misidentified as him), then just ritually vow never to speak his name again, never to print it, never to acknowledge his existence in any way. Show a total lack of sympathy for his cause, his logic, his problems, whatever. Only reference the shooting in terms of the community it affected: Columbine. Virginia Tech. Fort Hood. Oak Creek. Aurora. Tucson. Sandy Hook. DC Navy Yard. Santa Barbara. Charleston.
