I say this without a shred of irony or sarcasm: when are white men going to stand up and pressure each other to get themselves under control?

    Deep systemic power is poisonous.

Look at you acting like white women aren’t just as evil as this dude. Especially after the last days we have had, white women just called cop to do the job just like we saw with the swimming pool fiasco, white women just erase us from our own life, history and wear our blackness as a costume. If you can’t see that this level of dehumanization is what allow this man and so many others to just shoot us? I don’t know what I can do for you. Also wasn’t it just a couple of weeks ago that 2 women got next to nothing for killing black men?

We still have not moved past the 1960s. Not in how protestors are treated. Not in how racism works its violence out. This is deplorable and a wake up call to everyone who thinks we’re not a racist country.

Flagged them instead. It’s a form of hate speech to deny blatant racism is at work. It has the same smell as holocaust denial: racist propaganda.

In typically revolting fashion, the folks at Fox and Friends (Motto: Too Stupid For Words™) have labeled this as part of their so-called “War on Christians.” Because the idea that a white person is so racist that they shot up a black church bible study is too logical and does not feed their victim complex nor does it allow them to continue their “blacks kill blacks” dialogue to excuse pretty much all racist behavior.

And thinking humans everywhere are simply disgusted.

I don’t even think my mind can accept that. Like, it’s so fucking disgusting far fetched that they would make that argument just to erase the existence racism in their minds. I should expect it, but I just... UGH

I double checked their website and at least there they are not using that angle.

A frantic manhunt was on in South Carolina, hours after a “horrible scoundrel” opened fire in a historic African-American church in downtown Charleston, killing nine, including a state senator who is a prominent pastor, during a regular prayer meeting.

Police immediately branded the shooting spree, which began just after 9 p.m. Wednesday, a hate crime, and released surveillance images of a white man fleeing the scene...

I cried on the way to work this morning when I read about that little girl playing dead to survive. Five years old.

A five year old should not even know what playing dead is, should never have to play dead to save their life, should never have to witness something like this.

How. Just how. How can someone do this.

He just said ‘I have to do it.’ He said, ‘You rape our women, and you’re taking over our country, and you have to go,’”

If he was so worried about women getting raped, why did he shoot more women than men?

Where are you getting that quote?

EDIT: Thanks for directing me, guys! I just woke up and haven’t done my fair share of research yet this morning. Horrible. And I agree with another commenter who said that the shooter only spoke about white women because he saw black women as disposable.

      What a piece of trash.

She probably learned what to do in an active shooter situation in school because there are so many school shootings. :(

My first thought was how smart she was to do that, my second was how horrifyingly sad it is that a five year old would need to know how to do that.

This week, my son’s class wrote letters to next year’s second graders so they’d know what to expect. It broke my heart when he told me that he wrote about lockdown drills - his advice was that they are scary, but if you stay quiet and still and listen to the teacher, they’re over soon.

He’s eight. I hate that he has any level of awareness that things are so effed up in this world.

I can’t decide how I feel about the 5 year old thinking of playing dead to protect herself. I am proud (I don’t even know if that is the right word) that she followed her survival instinct, but immensely sad that she had to do that, and sad/glad for whoever raised her that taught her to listen to her gut.

Bottom line, she is a baby and I am horrified that she had to witness this.

A five year old should never have to play dead for any reason other than they think it would be fun. They should never have to witness death and destruction like this. No one should.

My heart literally breaks. This is too much. It’s too sad.

I’m not sure “playing dead” was necessarily conscious on her part. If you read the book Unthinkable: Who Survives Disasters and Why (you should — everyone should read this book), many, many people freeze/appear catatonic when confronted with life threatening situations. There’s a bit in the book about a ferry disaster where people just sat in chairs as the water slowly crept up their legs and people evacuated through the dining room couldn’t get them to move.

Freezing during horrible situations is a problem especially for rape victims who are often then accused of “not fighting back” even though they are biologically incapable.

In this case it may have saved a girl’s life.

I feel unbelievably bad for this little girl and hope she gets all the therapy and help she could ever need and will not blame herself for surviving.

Today, I’m reminded of some other little girls: Addie, Denise, Carole, and Cynthia. Their deaths over 50 years ago (also in a church) still scar our country. Like Solange, I’m tired. I’m angry. But mostly, I feel a sad sense of dèjá vu.

This was a carefully planned out act of terror. He knew that black people are welcoming and accepting. He knew that he could easily go in and worship with black people without being challenged. That’s white privilege for you. I sure as hell couldn’t go into many southern white churches and be accepted.

I know. That is what sucks about this. Targeting black churches targets a center of community power.

That said, you could come to my church, but then we aren’t exactly a white church. More of a mostly white church. We’ve been integrated since we were planted. So your point stands.
