offer help in obtaining or avoiding abortion

AVOIDING abortion? Avoiding abortion. Avoiding. Abortion.

Like, help in running away from the cleaver-wielding abortionists who are chasing them? You don’t need to avoid an abortion. You either pursue one, or you don’t. It doesn’t pursue you.

Well, easy access to low-cost or free birth control, such as Planned Parenthood provides, does have a way of helping people avoid needing an abortion.

I may just be a stupid liberal, but in order to “avoid” (bad word, as you’ve pointed out) abortion, I think one must avoid pregnancy, and in order to avoid pregnancy, one must know how to do that, which Texas is doing their darnedest to not allow. That’s just my silly, female, liberal mind thinking again, though, and I know Texas doesn’t like that.

A conservative state doing things to make it even more difficult for teenagers to get accurate information about birth control and sex?! How outlandish. Totally shocking.

Texas is majority-minority now, the only majority-minority State that votes Republican because of all the voter suppression laws they have (plus Latinos there don’t vote; if they voted at the same rate as African-Americans, we wouldn’t even be discussing this since the State would be South Massachusetts.) But that can’t, won’t, last forever and liberals or at least moderates will once again take power down there. There are all kinds of voter registration drives for Latinos going on and Texas will revert back to the Democrats and we will have our revenge, soon. Texas going blue will also kill off the GOP nationally, not that they’re in any position to win the Presidency even with Texas in their column.

If only someone would think of the children, maybe there would be less of them.

They think of the children... just in a completely asshole-ish manner.

I’m sure these are the same people yelling at women to go to the toilet when they’re nursing their babies in public, because, “think of the children!”

Fewer. Maybe there would be fewer children. Sorry. I know it’s summer, but the teacher in me can’t let this pass. :)

For many decades now, Texas has been going on the assumption that giving schoolkids information about their bodies will lead to them fucking like bunnies and getting pregnant. By keeping sex utterly mysterious and terrifyingly risky, they’ll stop those crazy kids from fucking.

In the late 1980s, I was living in Houston and married to a Pentecostal youth minister who was rather shocked to discover, during a youth ministry conference in Houston, that the local Southern Baptists were wringing their hands over what to do about their pregnancy rate among unmarried teen girls—whatever it was, it was the all-time highest rate of any church or youth groups in the whole state, which was something the SBC was not happy about, obviously. They were going with spin-doctoring: no no, this was a good thing because it meant they weren’t aborting their precious little fetuses like all those other Christian sluts! The ad hoc reasoning blew my mind, and my then-husband’s as well. But we knew, though we never discussed it, that most of our denomination’s weddings seem to have birth announcements following 5 or 6 months after the wedding day.

Misinformation and witholding information failing? Give more misinformation and withold more information! Terrorizing young people with absurdly high penalties for having sex and they’re still having unapproved sex? Terrorize them worse and make the penalties higher! Surely it’ll start working sooner or later, right? Right? They’ll stop fucking and then probably go back to church and bring their parents, and maybe the girls will start wearing dresses and the boys will start becoming manly-men, they’ll all start listening to their elders again, and it will all Go Back to the Way It Was In America’s Golden Age (a 1950s/Victorian hybrid that only exists in fundagelical minds). This culture war isn’t about safety or health; it’s about re-enshrining Christian privilege and clawing for control in a culture that is rapidly leaving these fuckwidgets and their enforced ignorance behind.

I attended public school in Houston from 1987-1999 and got an awesome sex education in Cy-Fair ISD. This whole abstinence only, lalalala-I-can’t-hear-you, if we don’t talk about the s-e-x nobody will have it bullshit started somewhere around 2001 (in Houston, at least.)

Lamar High School is smack dab in the middle of the richest area in all of Houston. These kids couldn’t be more prividleged if they tried. My guess is the district blocked access because everybody there gets their abortions from a primary care provider and never thought to put up abortion information. Everybody already knows where to go.

Lamar is one of the few schools in the district where most of the students are not on free lunch. I doubt HISD is just thinking of Lamar. I teach 9th graders in one of the poorest schools in HISD and I have about a dozen students that have kids or are pregnant. It’s so sad I wish I could talk to my kids about this without getting fired. I hand girls seriously ask me if they could get pregnant by getting blow jobs. I know Houst on is fairly liberal for TX but a lot of people working on the school district are old school and religious. During all staff meetings we have group prayer. It’s strange.

Some good news: Rachel Maddow just broke the news that a woman will be placed on the $10 bill by 2020! Unless that woman is a Kardashian.

Abortions are like gayness: once kids find out they exist, they immediately wanna have them.
