So, to be clear, someone is standing in the street in NYC, trying to hail a cab, and an unmarked car pulls over....and they get in?

welcome to nyc post midnight where the need to get in line at a club/lounge is greater than safety.

There are stories of people getting into random cars thinking they are their Ubers, so yes, they do. I’ve gypsied (do they call it that?) from time to time but I prefer a clearly marked Yellow cab for my shit faced late night cab rides. (The only ones I take)

The entire purpose of a corporation is to limit the liability of its investors. Uber is simply taking that logic to its natural, perfect conclusion: Uber cannot be held responsible for anything that happens on its watch, but it is always entitled to a cut of the revenue, even if their “contractors” are already taking a loss. Uber is almost a no-risk proposition if you’re a investor.

Corporations limit the liability of investors but not of the corporation itself. So Uber’s investors can only lose what they put in, but Uber can (theoretically) lose everything it has.

Well, yeah, but from a rational investor’s perspective, there’s no point in crying over spilled milk. If Uber fails, it fails.

I have this idea for an app that arranges for a train to take you from almost anywhere to almost anywhere else in the city for a couple of bucks — and it avoids street traffic by running underground! Visit my kickstarter kiosks!

Buying a car to be an Uber driver has to be the most uber dumb thing a person could possibly do.

I had a cabbie pick me up the other day telling me that I was his last yellow cab fare ever. Uber is going to change his life, loan him the money to buy a car, and he was going to be a wealthy man. He was so anti TLC regulation that I din’t have the heart tell him he was signing a pact for indentured servitude. Plus I didn’t want him dropping me off in the middle of of the 59th st bridge.

“Everyone else” as long as you don’t count the many jurisdictions where Uber is either banned or being banned or regulated?

That City Paper story is a really good investigation of how much Uber drivers really make, by the way. Definitely worth reading if you haven’t already.

Relevant part of the article (which is in fact really good):

“And after 100 rides, I felt like I had enough to work with. Over that duration, during which I maintained a 4.83 adjusted rating, high enough to qualify me for Uber’s VIP program, Uber would say I “earned” $17 an hour in gross fares. But subtract the 28 percent that went to Uber and the 19 percent that went to expenses, and I actually made $9.34 an hour (plus a grand total of $16 in tips, $10 of which were for meeting up with a guy who left his Porsche keys in my backseat).

Driving for UberX isn’t the worst-paying job I’ve ever had. I made less scooping ice cream as a 15-year-old, if you don’t adjust for inflation. If I worked 10 hours a day, six days a week with one week off, I’d net almost $30,000 a year before taxes.

But if I wanted to net that $90,000 a year figure that so many passengers asked about, I would only have to work, let’s see ...

      27 hours a day, 365 days a year.”

His math is screwy. He cuts out his “expenses” as if it’s not money earned. I don’t subtract the money I spend on gasoline, clothing and other work related purchases from my “earnings”. Just because I have to buy a new laptop so I can work doesn’t mean I didn’t make that money.

He is confusing net profit with a pre-tax wage.

One theory about the uptick in illegal fares, put forth by the New York State Federation of Taxi Drivers, is that Uber alone isn’t enough for a driver to get by in NYC.

Another theory might be that there aren’t enough taxis to satisfy demand.

With so many cars confiscated, sounds like NYC should be charging surge impounding rates.

In a blog post, the company assured drivers that they’d actually make more money because demand would go up.

Is Uber incorporating time-dilation into its app? The only way this sentence makes sense is if Uber can somehow stretch out a driver’s day into unlimited hours to accommodate all this wonderful demand.
