I love that musicians like Neil Young and Bruce Springsteen are so often raided by the right to give them a little rockin’ cred, only for it to blow up in their faces when the composers point out how thoroughly poisonous and destructive right-wing politicians and their policies have been over the past 35 years. Meanwhile, they have to make do with Lee Greenwood’s blindered jingoism and Ted Nugent’s psychotic, pedophilic babble.

They really don’t have a lot of friendly choices as far as popular music goes, do they?

Despite how much I hate Ted Nugent, I still listen to “Stranglehold” every now and again. I can't believe Wayne Lapierre hasn't made it his theme song yet.

Ha. I always love when this happens.

On a related note... my cat has a better chance of winning than this guy. Who would trust the nation to a guy who somehow managed to bankrupt a casino? Not to mention several other businesses. At least my cat’s hair is real.

With the exception of the Texas Rangers, George W. Bush had a solid record of running companies into bankruptcy, and he got elected governor of Texas and POTUS. Trump’s multiple bankruptcies won’t really harm his campaign efforts - and he’s just one of the many candidates in the race not to win, but to increase appearance fees.

Ah the bluff approproativeness of the rich, unsuccessful white man. Seriously, Trump has bankrupted multiple companies at this point. He's a disaster of a businessman, and would be a disaster of a President. Fortunately America seems to know this, so we can all look forward to a comical primary.

Thank you for mentioning that his business model is, as far as I can tell:

-bring investors on the strength of his reputation

      -perhaps make money, or-

-go bankrupt if the project doesn’t make money. Keep the assets, pay the investors dimes or nickels on the dollar

-do it again at some point in the future, because there’s will be always low-information investors who will hand him money based on his reputation.

What is with Republicans and their complete inability to understand lyrics and copyright law? Yes, Trump is the least hip person on planet Earth (or damn near close), but he has staff. And I don’t care how unhip he is - surely he has some inkling that maybe, just maybe, Young is not the go to performer for his brand of politics and self-promotion.

It doesn’t matter if it’s music, video or art. The right has no appreciation for anything creative and thinks everything creative is public domain. Every time they want to cut anything they always start with the Arts. They give it no value.

Republicans make their living by ignoring the deeper implications of their own positions. Why would they be any more contemplative about their music? You may recall that George W. Bush often sent back any memo that ran to more than one page. The odds are good that Trump heard “keep on rockin’ in the free world” and didn’t brook a bit of dissent.

Plus, Trump has no interest in being self-aware. His business is self-important buffoonery, and “incidents” like this just further his fundamental objective: publicity.

      Good for Neil Young!

But he’s not “New Wave,” son.

        I beg to differ:

Granted he made the album to piss off the label and get out of his contract, but it was technically new wave.

It’s got to be frustrating as a Republican to want to rock in the free world and all you have access to is Ted Nugent’s mediocre back catalog. There’s not a lot of sociopolitical vision you can hitch to the back of Wango Tango and Cat Scratch Fever.

Because of how fucked up the rights of musical artists in America currently are, I’m not sure Neil Young even has the right to bar his music from being used. Wouldn’t Trump—or anybody else—be allowed to use it as long as they pay the compulsory license fee?

Also, is the “New Wave” thing a joke? Neil Young has been famous since the 60s. While he’s got a very eclectic catalogue, he’s never been what I would consider a “new wave” artist (maybe the Trans album comes closest in parts).

This is not fair use. Let’s just be clear. Absolutely not.

But you are right: In the context of a live rally, the artist is not contacted and I don’t believe they have any way of revoking the licence. Most politicians just stop using an artists music after the artist publicly distances themselves from them, because the optics are so shitty. But ASCAP has every right to issue the licence. Commercial broadcasts are a different kettle of fish. A songwriter or recording artist would have the chance to say no to those.

Um...the song is ironic anyway. It’s full of crack babies and “a kinder, gentler machine gun hand.” So Trump is even dumber than we think, if that’s possible.

So does anyone else remember when Trump sent people to Hawaii for what seemed like months to gather information about how Obama wasn’t born there? And he promised a “huge reveal?” Does anyone remind him of that nowadays? And how can I get a job working for him in Hawaii “looking for information?”
