      Gun enthusiast here, yeah it’s a little weird, but it’s one freaking little boat in the world’s biggest freaking Navy, and it’s a cool honor for her to receive. I don’t perceive her as being anti-military or anti-American, but some people get pissy when you suggest that maybe putting the 4473 on private sales is a good idea. I can’t agree with her entire stance(the AWB was dumb and useless the first time around, another 10 years ain’t gonna make it less dumb), but that core idea, to help keep guns from those who might misuse them is a good idea.

      It wouldn’t, and that’s why it’s scary, because it’s frankly a really dumb idea that the legislature might actually be dumb enough to attempt to pass. If you want a more historical reason, look at most any dictatorship or country under strict rule in history. One of the first steps in many of those countries was disarming the civilian populace. Since some gun enthusiasts take the whole “my gun is there if the government needs to be overthrown as stated by the Founding Fathers” rather seriously, the idea of disarmament is quite upsetting to them. For myself, personally, I dislike the idea of being disarmed primarily because of it violating my civil rights, with overthrowing Capitol Hill being tertiary to me. Secondary is I don’t want my hobby being ruined because some people are irresponsible fuckwits.

      Aside from Presidents and Secretaries of the Navy (the secretary of the Navy picks ship names, so they may be biased in honoring their predecessors), very few get named after living people.

      Eh, they’re just the loud ones. You probably deal with lots of gun owners all the time and you'd never know because they aren’t raging pieces of shit. I think these nuts get so upset about regulation because they know they aren’t responsible or stable enough for the responsibility of gun ownership. Here in NY for a pistol permit you need to have 4 friends intelligent enough to write you a letter of recommendation, I can see why these mouth breathers would be afraid of that obstacle.
