If a man can say that he identifies as a woman and we all respect and accept it, why can’t a white person say they identify as black?

Race seems like it would be much easier to appropriate than gender. Is anyone doubting this woman’s dedication to the cause?

Race is external (we say that someone is black because they’re darker than those people over there).

Gender is internal (we all experience gender inside our own heads, grouped around a vague societal ideal of “woman” and “man.” If gender were an external construct, then all intersex people would be genderqueer).

Really, there are lots and lots of reasons why gender and sexuality aren’t the same thing, historically or in the contemporary world, but that is the gist of it.

Mallory Ortberg nailed it when she suggested that Ms. Dolezal has much in common with the grown women who pretend to be high school students. IOW, something is very, very wrong with this woman. Especially when you consider all of her claims of race-based stalking, nooses in her house, swastikas on her doors, evil packages mailed to her, etc.

I miss that show. And she was a great character! Such a superficial moron at first, who grew by leaps and bounds thanks to her experiences - and sometimes her own transgressions - with her new companions.

I don’t know, many “white” Americans especaiy those from the south actually have a bit of African American ancestry. There are many mixed people who have parents who identify as one race and have children who look entirely like another race. Maybe she isn’t black, but in the U.S. No one can define your race, but you yourself. Sooo if she wants to look like a person with African ancestry and she is not doing it in a way that is disrespectful or mocking who cares? There are many people who look “typically” black who have found out from DNA tests that they are far less “black” then they appear to be. Do they lose their black card because of that? This story is silly and kind of racist.

Maybe not her “black card”, but probably her “President of the local NAACP Chapter [obtained under false circumstances] card”, yeah.

It’s not about her actual racial makeup. Black people are accustomed to having white-looking people in their families and communities, and no one does a DNA test to make sure they are black enough. The issue is the fact she lied. I mean, she told BIG lies.

I can only assume this is elaborate marketing for the upcoming season of ‘Arrested Development.’ She even looks like Maebe.

That said, I read this earlier on Buzzfeed, and the comments made my eyes cross. So many people claiming that this is the same thing as Caitlyn Jenner’s situation.

Wow! Now THIS is going to be a debate. I’m interested to see her motivation on this. Is she appropriating Blackness or is this how she truly identifies herself? Is this some kind of disorder, self hatred, or what? I mean, she straight up left one of the most whitest and sparse places in the U.S and truly turned her back on it by choosing to be Black. For years, our community has been trying to divide those who are Black and those who are not Black enough by the nature of fully identifying with the dominant culture. Is she Black, a fraud, crazy, or a bit of it all?

I’ll take “some kind of disorder,” and “hatred of self and of family” for $200.

Also, “spectacular hair and makeup artist who should work in movies.” Although, maybe not ‘til after she’s had some lengthy and in-depth psychiatric treatment...

Well given that I have people in my familiy that look just like her (and I’m Black), I’m actually impressed of her cultural appropriation. This just goes to show you that race truly pretty fluid and is a man made construct. Why she would want to be Black is anyone’s guess. All I can say is, gurl you do you. Good luck on whatever adventure you’re on.
